Hi Pilou,

Thank's a lot. It's a very interesting article!

I'm going to take a closer look at it, as soon as possible.

Ciao,

Marco.

Hi Marco, I agree with what Chipp wrote above, for things that are kind of organic smooth and blobby all over, usually a sub-d polygon modeling program is better suited than a CAD program like MoI.

For trying it in MoI maybe try lofting it in the other direction though, I've attached an example where I drew in some lines from the side and projected them onto your shape to get some curves, and then did curve blends to make them closed, then used Loft with Loft Style = "loose" through those cross sections.

And it might be better to not try and loft the protruding section on the bottom back, and instead model that separately and trim an opening between the 2 pieces and use surface blend to connect them. Trying to incorporate that directly into the loft all at once kind of introduces some stress in that area because it changes too abruptly there.

Caro Marchetto:you are learning Moi right?so please avoid these sharp corners or weird surfaces that suddendly change direction like these

I tried this way:first i copy all side edges, rebuild to have less seams and mirror, then made a loft to get the chair
so i made few modifications to give a better smooth curvature deleting these surface and did Blend G2 using different bulge values

Now yellow and red edges used to sweep or network to get the cap

That's all i can do,forget to fillet or do Mike's method(sweeping circleson side edges+trim+blend) surface still too complicate

Hi everyone,

first of all i wish to thank each of you for the help and the explanations!

1) To Michael :
Thanks a lot for teaching me a different approach.
It's not exactly what i was looking for but it's a good way for me to learn another technique in order to create organic shapes.

2) To Mauro (M-DYNAMICS) :
I followed your method and the result comes very close to what i wanted to achieve.
As wrote by you, filleting remains hard to do and i want to give me a chance to try Mike's method.
Thanks a lot.

3) To OSTexo :
Your result looks very nice and seems very simple to reproduce.
I will try your way and i'm curious to know if this method can lead me to get a more lightweight final object, in terms of number of control points.
But i'm wondering if with your method, the two side caps still preserve a good surface continuity with the chair's body.
Could you please tell me more precisely how did you generate the curves used to create the caps ?

Anyway, thanks again to each of you !

Ciao,

Marco.

Hello mkdm,

I used Blend with continuity being G2 with the chair body surfaces. I do think you are running into issues a bit because of your control point placement, you might want to bump it up a bit and readjust some of the points so the blended surfaces don't start folding over themselves.

Hi Pilou,

It's a very nice rendering !

Is it based on the suggestions given by OSTexo?

Anyway, it seems very close to what's my goal.

I hope to try to build a new version of the chair, made with more smoothed curves, and therefore, with better surface continuity, especially in the filleted areas.

Thank's for all and have a nice day,

Marco.

Thanks for this suggestion and i hope to build a new version of the chair made by better relaxed and smoothed source curves.

Could you please post the .3dm file of your version of the chair ?
Just in order to have a good starting point...

Thanks for all and have nice day,

Marco.

I have not modified any curves! Used all functions of Moi! :)

Maybe not perfect for building (your curves are too abrupt) but sufficient for rendering!

Here's a method from your first file to keep an angular look and use fillets to smooth the edges. (I also fixed the lack of continuity in the blends first, like others)

Hi everyone!

I sincerely wish to thank each of you for your help and your ingenuity!

A special thanks go to BurrMan for his video tutorial.

In order to become better skilled in Moi, i'm trying all of the different techniques and approaches, that you showed me.

I'm experiencing even that every minor change to the different procedures,
leads me to a very different final result, especially regarding to the surface continuity.

Merely born as an accidental modeling study, thanks to your suggestions,
this "chair" is becoming a good and unexpected workbench.

My actual goal is to become sufficiently accustomed to dealing with
solids made by a mix of sharp edges and g2 smoothed areas, with or without filleting.

Thanks again to all of you and have a nice night.

Marco.

Hi Pilou,

Thank you for reminding the "LineWeb" technique.

It's an alternative and interesting way to deal with this kind of "caps".

Have a nice day,

Marco.
