Hi everyone,

first of all i wish to thank each of you for the help and the explanations!

1) To Michael :
Thanks a lot for teaching me a different approach.
It's not exactly what i was looking for but it's a good way for me to learn another technique in order to create organic shapes.

2) To Mauro (M-DYNAMICS) :
I followed your method and the result comes very close to what i wanted to achieve.
As wrote by you, filleting remains hard to do and i want to give me a chance to try Mike's method.

3) To OSTexo :
Your result looks very nice and seems very simple to reproduce.
I will try your way and i'm curious to know if this method can lead me to get a more lightweight final object, in terms of number of control points.
But i'm wondering if with your method, the two side caps still preserve a good surface continuity with the chair's body.
Could you please tell me more precisely how did you generate the curves used to create the caps ?

Hello mkdm,

I used Blend with continuity being G2 with the chair body surfaces. I do think you are running into issues a bit because of your control point placement, you might want to bump it up a bit and readjust some of the points so the blended surfaces don't start folding over themselves.

It's a very nice rendering !

Is it based on the suggestions given by OSTexo?

Anyway, it seems very close to what's my goal.

I hope to try to build a new version of the chair, made with more smoothed curves, and therefore, with better surface continuity, especially in the filleted areas.

Thanks for this suggestion and i hope to build a new version of the chair made by better relaxed and smoothed source curves.

Could you please post the .3dm file of your version of the chair ?
Just in order to have a good starting point...

I have not modified any curves! Used all functions of Moi! :)

Maybe not perfect for building (your curves are too abrupt) but sufficient for rendering!

Here's a method from your first file to keep an angular look and use fillets to smooth the edges. (I also fixed the lack of continuity in the blends first, like others)

Hi everyone!

I sincerely wish to thank each of you for your help and your ingenuity!

A special thanks go to BurrMan for his video tutorial.

In order to become better skilled in Moi, i'm trying all of the different techniques and approaches, that you showed me.

I'm experiencing even that every minor change to the different procedures,
leads me to a very different final result, especially regarding to the surface continuity.

Merely born as an accidental modeling study, thanks to your suggestions,
this "chair" is becoming a good and unexpected workbench.

My actual goal is to become sufficiently accustomed to dealing with
solids made by a mix of sharp edges and g2 smoothed areas, with or without filleting.

Hello mkdm,

I did not recreate any of the source curves or surfaces, I just used Blend and chose specific surface edges and blended between those and flattened the Blend a bit to 0.4. I think you just would do better to have just a few more control points on your surfaces since it's one of the few instances I've seen where I think you are lacking a little control on the surfaces by having too few control points. I happen to think having too many control points is worse than not having enough, so being balanced is the best policy in my opinion. Add control points where you absolutely need them, and no more.

Thanks a lot for your contributions, it's very close to what i want to achieve.

I mean...very smart solution.

I'd say, based on all the interesting suggestions that all of you gave me, i think that now i've got a sufficient set of tools in my Moi's toolbox,
in order to get better results in modeling this sort of things.

Above all, i learned these three things :

1) Using more relaxed and less stretched source curves leads to smoother surfaces,
2) Not always, having curves with few control points turns out to be a good idea,
3) It's not so simple build joined surfaces with a decent G2 (at least) continuity :)

I understood that my modeling approach has a recurring defect in itself :
take for granted that building things with less control points as possible, leads to get smoother objects with the best surface continuity.

The problem is that i'm not still able to understand where to puts additional control points in order to get better results.

Anyway....thanks to all for your suggestions and have a nice day!

Hi speedy (AL2000),

i think that certainly there are a lot of Moi users from Italy,
and i'm really very pleased of that!

I love italian language, and not only because is my language...,
but i must admit that i much prefer to talk technical related arguments,
especially anything that concerns computer graphics and computer science in general, in English language,
'cause not only it is widely used by almost everyone, but in my hopinion, it's best suited to be used for technical topics in general.

And i affirm this, although my current english level is rather poor.

Anyway....long life to the italian language and all other languages, and let's have fun with Moi!
