<< is this something possible to do with 3d?

Yes you can! :)
It's the Flow function as you find! The more interesting function of Moi! :)
Menu Transform / Deform / Flow
You must have 2 objects: Source - Target
And a Line / Curve / Surface as Transfert (here the rectangle)

Any Rotate - Size - Move of any Source, Target, Transfert depending of what result you want!

Have fun!

PS 2 videos (Sorry in French, but very Visual! :)

Hi Misiu, yes like Pilou writes above you can use the Transform > Deform > Flow command to deform objects from a straight line onto a bent curve, or also from a flat base plane onto a curved surface.

Please take a look at the help file topic for Flow for an extended description of it:

Also some links to previous forum discussions about Flow here:

Thanks guys.

Getting a bit closer. I re-did the mesh for a much closer end result to what I was thinking. I did manage to get the flow command to work with some extra experimentation and wrapping around half a circle+mirroring the result.

Still some strange issue with edges overlapping, but hopefully I will figure out what is causing the surface alignment issue.

Unwrap of a circle can produce a line of the proper length to use in the input. So either the line or a plane of the lines length is useful.
