GUI performance compared to CAD...

have a look at deelip.com. there is a post from august, 4th that shows the same model of an engine in different CAD programs...and a ???? engine - that was revealed in the comments as MoI. Would have guessed the same from the looks. It performes great compared to programs a few thousand € / $ more expensive.. :D

Very well done Michael!

Thanks macray!

With a heavy model like that, the majority of the draw time is actually spent handling the edges and I have some plans for MoI v3 that should help to speed up edge display further as well.

In one of those videos of a higher end product, I noticed when the clcik and rotate drag started, that all of the edges automatically hid....

In the 3d pdf version, I have seen in the 3d hoops development site, that their feature is to allow to set that "Turn into wireframes when rotating" that you see in the video. The demo of it was impressive and allowed them to load and work on massive models, with the use of "adaptive degeneration". Same as MoI would do by turning everything off and setting a coarse angle, on the fly.

So, somehow it takes a "This is the point of focus" area, and keeps that at high quality, then degenerates everything outside of this value. The value is adjustable, as well as the types of degeneration.

Hi Burr,

Yeah that would definitely speed up rotation by quite a lot in MoI if it did that.

But I'd kind of prefer not to do that if possible, it kind of makes for a somewhat jarring visual effect because the model suddenly kind of "pops" into a fairly different appearance when you start rotating.

Also doing that on any rotation just all the time also actually penalizes simple models where the edges could have been drawn fine...

Instead of focusing on that, I'd prefer to just speed up the edge draw by possibly using multiple CPU cores and also doing a slightly rougher curve smoothness when it is taking a significant amount of time to draw things.

With that in place that could then could help give a boost any time that the viewport drawing is behaving slowly. That's good because there are a lot of other circumstances where the viewport needs to be redrawn like when selecting things or drawing things - so it's good for any kind of slow draw behavior to get some kind of slight quality decrease + speed increase rather than only something that helps rotation specifically and not other activities.

Then after that kind of automatic degradation would be in place then I could look at possibly not drawing edges at all in some specific activities like rotations on heavy objects.

Michael has done an excellent job, no doubt.

I am writing another post (or maybe a series) on the one thing that makes MoI really stand out from the rest - its sexy graphics.

Just did. See http://www.deelip.com/?p=2730

I have also added a link to the five part series that I wrote on MoI's graphics engine. http://www.deelip.com/?p=2769

Does anyone know if this model can be downloaded somewhere? I would love to have it to give it a try with my Renderengine :)

Hi Oliver,

> Does anyone know if this model can be downloaded somewhere?

I think Deelip mentioned somewhere on his blog that the model is not available for download because it was sent to him by a client and he was asked not to do any wide distribution of it.

From the screenshots from deelipe site, I can see diferent shading options of models in viewport, but I cant find any option to change the default shading style of viewport. Is this a feature only available into the full version, because Im using the demo-no save version?

Hi artisanicview, that is actually available in the trial versions (both the 30-day and no-save ones).

It's a global setting though, not an individual per-object thing, the setting is under Options > View > Lighting options.

There are a few options under there for changing how the lights are set up, and whether objects have shiny specular highlights or not, and a couple of other things.

Some more details here:
