Cad software

Hello,

Moi it´s perfect for a new user that needs creation of free parts, but has a problem (even that i´ve got present that the main concern it´s modelling not anything else), that to produce something we need to export information to another software.

Does anyone knows any cad software able to read some interface file made by Moi and to make some plan views with dimensions on it?
The possibility to be freeware was perfect, if not it´s better than nothing.

Thanks
Joao

Hi Joao,

Yeah, it's been discussed a few times, Michael has plans for some basic communication tools at some stage.

Here are some past discussions, Sketchup looks good for the free option.

Check out Progecad ... it is fully compatible with AutoCad and at a reasonable price ... not free but it is a complete drafting solution.

Hi Joao,

Pretty much any of the "Parametric Solid Modeling" programs should be able to do this task for you - these are the set of programs like SolidWorks, SolidEdge, Pro/E, Alibre, etc...

Several of these programs can directly read in MoI's main .3dm file format, otherwise they all support IGES format which MoI can export, and also STEP format which MoI v2 can export.

For low cost options, there are a couple of things to try.

One is Alibre Design Xpress, which is the free version of Alibre:
http://www.alibre.com/xpress/software/alibre-design-xpress.asp

Another is Punch ViaCAD, which is not free, but inexpensive ($99):
http://www.punchcad.com/products/viacad2d3dV6.htm

Either of those can read in solid model data, produce a hidden-line drawing from it and allow you to dimension the drawing.

There are also some other options like Danny mentioned you could export to SketchUp and use dimensions in there - but that will be working on mesh data and would be more oriented towards doing some architectural things and not really solid modeling things such as radial type dimensions, etc...

Also Rhino can be used for this purpose as well.

I would probably give Alibre Xpress and/or ViaCAD a try first, those should probably work well for generating the 2D plans from a solid part.

Yes, if you export them as .dwg files they read just as well as in AutoCad.

Hi Eric - MoI itself does not currently have a DWG export... You're probably using Rhino to do that part?

I'm not sure if Joao (the original poster in this thread) has Rhino or not.

Hy guys,

thanks for the tips regarding low cost software.
In fact the tip for Viacad seems ok. In the case of Alibre i think there are some minor issues on the agreement regarding use.

The issue here is because the software is to a third part user and it will be an issue to all customers i sell in the future, so on one hand it must be inexpensive or free to give it away with Moi and on the other hand must be very easy, to follow Moi philosophy and to not take much time preparing information to fabricate.

The issue on the Dwg is that as Michael mention, does not exist export function over this extension...

Thanks
João

Yes, my error ...

I move pretty fluidly between the three softwares and sometimes forget which is best at what.

cheers,
eric

Hello,

I´ve been searching for a solution, because probably i´m not the only to have this problem, so a solution could be used widely.

Can you look at:
http://www.workxplore-3d.com/us/

It seems a very good viewer on the free module, because among other items has the possibility to read Iges and Step what in the case of Moi solves the problem.
After 30 days we loose some advanced options to dinamically measure radius and other but maintain possibility to measure with points and so on what from my side it´s enough.

Can anyone test this as more experience user´s of Moi to check about the quality or not of this solution?

Thanks
Joao

Hi Joao,

I think the best low cost alternative is viacad, there is even a cheaper '2d only' version. You can directly import view from a 3dm file.

Alibre can be a nice translator also to output dwg, you can dimension and detail it in doublecad or something else afterward. A bit tedious though.

It all depends on the type of drawings you wish to make, the level of detail and quantity you will output.

I sure hope to see dimensioning tool in Moi, it would make an amazing tool!
