Hi Yannada, looks like a limitation in the geometry library where it doesn't currently handle surface offsetting an arbitrary surface of higher degree. It can handle fillet surfaces of higher degree but not the corner patch. If you delete the corner patch then you'll be able to offset the rest of this shape.

This is a problem in the geometry library which I will report, but it may take a while for them to make a fix.

Hi olio, I use the Solids++ geometry library from http://integrityware.com/

I also have quite a lot of custom code developed for a bunch of things, but surface offsetting is one of the things that comes straight from their library.

is not really a coincidence, I have been running some tests also sort of studying their geometry library which would help me to clear things up in my head. Therefore I don't have crazy requests from you in the future. Anyhow thanks for the reply. http://www.integrityware.com/tutorials/Max/Release20/Power_Offset/Power_Offset.html

Looks to me like Pilou used a regular circular fillet shape, which doesn't happen to run into the problem.

Yannada, one other general tip is that it can be better to apply fillets after offsetting rather than filleting first.

I don't use any fillet before apply offset with your example file 3dm
But something curious : is it normal that over 3 cm nothing works in my example above?
your example was in mm, I change it in cm or without unit system

If I take 3 faces of a normal cube I can offset any measure!

Hi Pilou,

In the example file that I downloaded from the above (test_34.3dm), there was already a fillet applied. Did you get a different file?

It looks like your example is just an image with no .3dm model file? Could you please post the model file so I can take a look?

Hi Pilou,

> After 3cm ??? Offset seems not works!

Yeah, it looks related to the same problem, it is having a problem with the corner patch.

If you delete the small rounded corner patch, you can then go above 3cm.

That is interesting that it works when you scale the object down by 10 times though.

Same advice as before though - it works better to apply the offset to the plain box, and then apply fillets to everything after offsetting has been done, rather than filleting before.

Hi yannada,

> Here is another one. Indeed not able to offset

Does it have a high degree? Singularities? Large or small size in units?

Those are some of the things to look for that the offsetter does not like.

But it's hard for me to tell any of these things just looking at a screenshot, can you please post the model file?
