You are getting the same problem i had on my first try, you have forgot nothing, the Cap ends don't seem to work from a curve that was projected.

I extruded my before then use the tire profile to cut the un-wanted pieces and move the pieces a little higher with the move function to get the thread height.

That is a Test render with half of my tire

If i can i will post what i did later this weekend.

Thanks Micheal.

Nice one Brian, are you using the reference image that i post?

I find with that one that the tire and the RIM fit perfectly.

Not stricktly exactly though I did fiddle with images to make them adaptable to the tyre I made.
I tend to apply a bit of poetic licence to a lot of things--often making mistakes---sorry,---- creating oportunities for new learning experiences!

All good fun and appreciate all the information from you and others.

2 new test with 12 degree thread projection on the tire, then trim, corrected minor issue, mirror then array 30 times.

Hi Brian,

Ok, sorry for that one - never type something where you are half asleep.

i am trying to get a perfect (in away) round thread, or if you prefer the right curve that follow the tire.

So what i did was to use my tire, projected the thread on it, then use 2 planes and i rotated them so i have a 12 degree piece of the tire with the thread being cut so when you array (cirle) your 12 degree pieces. (only need 30 to do the 360 degree) that way i was certain that the thread that need to continue (the ones that are doing a full 360) would be fitting correctly.

But while doing this i found with Carrara 6 Pro i have 12 Degree banding on the render. So what i did his to have only the thread in the array and redid a revolve for the tire, but the thread still show the banding. (banding showing because of the light reflected).

I will if i can tonight, put some image to show what i did.

Cold

PS: I will try to have at least the 2 softwares that render have the similar setup to really give the difference. I just need to verify when i export to OBJ what carrara can do to import better or play with a setting.

To Michael,

If you look at my thread on the tire, the one that follow the edges of the of the tire, i tried to edit so i can lower the 2 points so the thread seem to be finishing into the tyre instead of being, i would say, square/rectangle shape.

I found that after extrude the piece that was trim, if i click on show points, it only show point from the curve at the bottom of the piece that was extruded but no point on the top part. (hope you understand - if not i will show you what i mean when i will be home). i think i did try to separate but i couldn't play with the part, unless i wasn't doing a functionn first ?? o.O

Hi Cold - re: show points - showing points does not work on solids where the surfaces of the solid are joined at trimmed edges rather than a natural edge of the underlying surface.

Please see this FAQ answer for a more detailed explanation and some illustrations that try to explain this issue.

Once you do an Edit/Separate on an object, you should then be able to turn on control points for the individual surfaces since they no longer have any joins to other surfaces.

If you have a problem with the Edit/Separate process, could you please post a file with just the one piece that will not cooperate in it? That would help me to examine the specific problem area.

One note - the points on stuff like the end caps of an extrude are typically a fair amount larger than the original outline, so if you are zoomed in close you may need to zoom out a bit to see the points for the cap's underlying surface.

Does that explain what you are mentioning? If not then I'll need a bit more specific information to understand.

- Michael

Cold,

Here's something I did to get what your talking about.

I extruded my tread pattern, then Bool diff with a profile curve of tire to get the curve suface.

Then I select that suface and extrude it to tread height + sink some into tire before array for later bool.

I did the same cut for the "Edge tread" before array to get the blend from tread to sidewall.

Yes Burr,

I did try that, but i really prefer doing the project, trim from the tire itself.

Still doing some test but i think i getting the hang of things, my start to go for the RIM then the break.

Another test with thread in Carrara

Another one, projection work better.

Result is much cleaner.

i think i will attack the text part of the wheel and the rim now.
