Hi All2000...

Funny design :)
In my opinion, the render need more plastic looks....

BTW, could I have the 3dm file ?
I want to try render with my rendering tool.

Thanks !

Hi Al :) Which version of Flamingo are you using, it looks like V1 ? I remember that V1 did not have HDRI environment, but at least you can put a rectangular image, set to spherical and it will help with reflections. Also i think you are killing your scene with too many hard spotlights. I am attaching a file here with an example using just two colored rectangular lights, gradient environment, and soft shadows. Soft shadows in Flamingo are really bad (and slow) compared to other engines, but you must use them if you want to get a decent render quality... If you plan to continue with Flamingo, i think you will get much better results by upgrading to V2. Although the "mistakenly slipped out" WIP version of Flamingo NxT absolutely KILLS Flamingo 2 in every way. Did you catch that download before they removed the link? It's a very cool engine. Very fast, good quality, progressive rendering, drag and drop UI, good material preview and soooooooo easy to use... I really don't think too many people are buying Flamingo 2. It's rumored that Rhino 5 beta will expose the full Toucan render engine which has been hidden under the surface of Rhino 4. And it seems to be more advanced than Flamingo 2...

My quick attempt at a render. This was using Brazil for Rhino. My office PC is a bit underpowered for rendering, so I had to reduce the quality of the render cache, GI, and SSS sampling more than I would like to. The result came out OK though....

another one rendered in Brazil for Rhino. This one using a "Shadow Light" texture with extremely biased ramp curve. So the disc glows only where the clips make contact on it's surface. Also there is some light emitting from bottom of the disc... :)

Hi Grendel...

The error is on the 3D model. When I import from 3dm to SW, some surfaces fail.

Hi Anis - what renderer and what file format are you using to transfer data to the rendering program?

Hi Michael....

I open MoI 3dm directly in solidworks 2008, then render in photoview 360 which can open solidworks file directly. As I posted before, the import result has some error surfaces.

Hi Anis, yes there appears to be some trimming curve problems in 3 of the small surfaces in the object.

If you export to a polygon format, the polygon mesh will have some errors in those areas, but they are so tiny you won't see them unless you zoom in super close to that particular spot on the model inside of one of those tiny grooves.

But when importing the Solids information, it looks like SolidWorks is more sensitive to those errors and will leave out the larger surfaces adjacent to the areas with trim curve problems as well.

So you will get a better render result in this particular case if you export to a mesh format like .obj instead.

- Michael

Brian, it looks like you are missing surfaces. Did you export from MoI? or you imported the 3DM to Carrara? I always had problems with Carrara's mesher...

mmm... Photoview 360 (aka Modo via Solidworks) :P How do you like it so far? Have you used modo before? How does it compare in speed/handling of dense meshes?
