Fillet - Need Help

Thanks Phil and Momso.

The surfaces were joined and fillet failed. The Rhino file from Momso shows that fillet works fine when the edges are correct.

I made a new model (3dm file attached) and a close up of the 3D view shows a mis-match in the curved surface. It appears a portion of the outer surface extends into the cut-out area. This cutout was made by subtracting an extruded closed outline from the base solid.

Can this type of issue be repaired, or do I start over?

My solids are made from 2D lines created in Corel Draw saved as EPS. Out of habit, I find Corel Draw fast and easy for creating 2D.

I will try next to create my model entirely within MOI.

Hi Ed, I haven't had a chance to examine your file yet (I'll be out on vacation for another week), but this type of thing can often be caused by a slight loop (like a type of little curly-cue) in the original curve that was extruded.

Another thing that that can cause problems is if the original curve has some of its control points stacked up exactly on top of one another. You can check this kind of problem by selecting the curve and use Edit/Show pts to display its control points. Any spot with multiple control points stacked up on top of one another will display with a red box around it.

> Can this type of issue be repaired, or do I start over?

It is possible to do a kind of salvage operation to repair this kind of thing, but it is somewhat involved. If your model was made up of surfaces more complex than an extrusion, then it would save time to try and repair it, but with an extrusion that is pretty straight-forward to reconstruct so I'd say for this one I would generally start over.

If you do want some more information on how to repair and do the kind of low-level "salvage" operation, please see this tutorial for some more information on the techniques involved: http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=446.17

I would normally select your original curves and then use Edit/Show pts to look for any irregularities in the points (like stacked points), and also kind of zoom in on the area that has the problem to look for curly-cues or any problems in that area.

Sometimes there can be problems with the curves made in 2D illustration programs - some things like curly-cues or stacked up points don't really have much of an effect for fills and 2D stuff like that, but become much more of an issue when the shapes are punched into 3D solids, and then particularly when surfaces made from those curves are intersected with each other. The fillet command involves calculating the intersection of surfaces behind the scenes in order to calculate its result.

Normally I would try to examine your curves to give you more specific advice to your situation, but if you need that it will have to wait until I return... Hope this helps some though.

It turns out the issue was my source 2D outlines from Corel Draw. I'm not sure what the exact issue was. No overlapping points or curly sections. However, I did make some manual edits of control points in Corel.

For the new model below, I started over in Corel and made all outlines by adding and subtraction outlines. No individual point edits were made. Saved as EPS, imported into MoI and extruded and subtracted solids. The nice fillet worked on the first attempt.

I'll see if I have future issues with Corel. If so, I'll need to get up to speed in MoI 2D.

Hi Ed, did you have the problem source curves in that .3dm model file you attached above? If not, then can you please post them too, or send them to me at moi@moi3d.com?

I would like to check them out when I return next week and try to figure out what was causing the problem, maybe it is something I can fix up to work better.

Thanks,
- Michael

Michael - I wrote over the old file.

If I have an issue in the future I'll send the EPS export from Corel.

The original Corel drawing had several edits to the control points on the curved portion of the cutout. On the new version I just made a circle and a rectangle and subtracted to get the cut-out shape in Corel. Then saved as eps.

Hi Ed, well no big deal just in the future if you run into something similar it is a big help if you can send the problem file to me, that way I can see if I can fix things up to stop it from happening. Sometimes it is pretty hard to figure out what might have gone wrong without the actual example file in hand.

Your rendering in HyperShot is looking good! It seems like MoI and HyperShot make a pretty nice combination with one another.

For HyperShot rendering, you may find this OBJ editor utility useful from here: http://moi3d.com/resources#SeparateOBJ_editor - that program can be used to tweak an .obj file written by MoI to make it easier to assign different materials to different sub portions of an object in HyperShot.

We'll do.

Yep - been using your separateOBJ program for assigning materials to my jewelry models when using HyperShot. Maybe that will become a "save-as" option?

The render above was saved directly out of the HyperShot "realtime" window. Took under 30 seconds for the render to complete after I stopped moving the object and the environmental HDR.

MoI + HyperShot under $400. Great, affordable combination. Both programs are new, so I expect even greater things to come in future revisions!

Note for potential users: HyperShot requires at least a dual core or multi-processor machine.

Hi Ed,

The Hypershot render looks really nice. I downloaded the demo of Hypershot but haven't installed it yet. Is the dual core cpu an absolute must? I don't mind waiting on renders :) The only thing that seems a bit limiting with Hypershot is the small render size on the $200 version.

You have also a very easy renderer as plugin inside the free Google Sketchup !
Podium :) http://www.suplugins.com/
Here the object test of Steph without any regulate ! :) (30 seconds too)
Moi --> export format 3ds-->GoogleSketchup + Podium (free in 500*500 pixels images)

Hi Ed, it would be really cool to see more jewelry stuff that you do with MoI + HyperShot in the future, please post them if you get a chance!

> Maybe that will become a "save-as" option?

Yup, for v2 it should get included more directly.

> Took under 30 seconds for the render to complete after I stopped moving the object and the environmental HDR.

The speed is definitely one of the cooler parts for it. Also just general ease of use since you can get nice looking lighting with the HDR maps without any fuss.

Hi Mark, it seemed to work ok for me on a single core, but slower of course.
