Hi Guy, yup like described above doing an extrusion yourself that's of the limited depth that you need is the way to go for this right now.

Basically when you do the boolean with a 2D curve, internally in the boolean it automatically makes an extruded cutting shape for you that goes through the whole base object. You can manually do the extrusion if you need something different than that.

In the future I do plan on adding some kind of "limit depth" option for cutting things with curves too though to make that kind of thing a little more convenient.

You know, this behavior now seems to be convenient enough !
Just we have to know it, and it would be figured out within the tools documentation.

As this its " human logic" is quite good IMHO, because we can understand - and memorize - easily that one line is just "infinite" and a solid is space limited, so we can deal with this if we know it.
More and more options can become too much options, you don't think so ?

Yes, usually I agree with this and I'm normally the one to bring that up! :)

But things get a bit more inconvenient when you want to make an inset of a specific depth onto a curved surface more like an indentation rather than cutting all the way through a thin wall like you're doing in this case.

Basically anything that lets you do more work with only having to draw 2D curves as the things to control it can be quite helpful for efficiency. So an option that would allow 2D curves to be used in more situations than they are now is a good option to have I think.
