It allows you to trim things up and not remove anything. So you do the trim, if you just press done right away, it will not remove anything and leave all the trimmed up pieces in place. You have the option to "select" the pieces in the trim, and then choose to "Remove" or "Keep" the selected pieces before you hit done.
