The "Cootie" is a type of Morse code key called a "Side-Swiper" which was known to be invented as early as 1888.

Yes, 'Ham' Radio operators still enjoy communicating in Morse code (CW) and a key like the one shown here can not only be made at home from simple parts for as little as $10, but can easily produce code at 30 words per minute. One version shown, with the help of an electronic 'keyer', can easily reach 70+ wpm!
