KOKESHI 小芥子 from kokai-ko or shi; KO 小 small, little, slight, petty; KE, KAI 芥 that is reduced in powder, dust; ash, ashes, or remains; today KOKE = solid(body); bobbin (round figure). KO, CO(coco) 子 bird-egg; in suffix = young-woman, or SHI 子, child (boy). Others senses refers to death, ashes, & suggest a figurative urn; almost skittles for hearth (home, house, fire, center, focus). Kokeshi doesn't mean doll, or limbless, but "short-ash or ashes-child"; possible English Ashes = Fictitious trophy; or same symbolism of Ash Wednesday.
TANKA, TANSHI, old-Welsh DAN (from AN, element, principle) which attracts or magnetize senses, fine objet (see wing, feathers, precious, prime) + LLE [shi, shli, chli, li], where, place, spot, space = Tang's Poem; jade, gem, or jewel Poetry; or, for uncultured, "Short-Poem", because with 31 sung or singing syllables, on 5 verses not rhymed; but one voice, one way with strict rules for absolute true touch, or touch true of Nature (= contrary of religion, lie, rubbish, purring, to hum, to stink, to game, gamble, play, bet).
