Surface error on imported STEP & Iges Files

Hi Michael,

i have some trouble with a imported STEP file. The error also appears in the Same file as IGES. Rhino and Inventor can import this File without any Problems.
I had this kind of error a long time ago with some other step-file. i thought it was the stepfile.
But it seems that Moi have some trouble sometimes. I also couldn't copy and paste the geometry from Rhino to moi. It didn't happen anything.

I have attached the cropped model. I hopy you can analyse it and find the error.

thank you.

Hi BlackBird, can you please post the STEP file so I can test the original import process?

It looks like one problematic surface is a sphere with trims that happen to go right through the "pole" area of the sphere. Those pole areas are spots where the surface is collapsed down to a single point and can sometimes be difficult to process well because of things like degenerate derivative values.

The other problem one is a closed surface, that can also be a sensitive area to process because some CAD programs make trim boundaries that cross over the "seam" edge of the closed surface so the import has to try and split edges where they cross the seam.

For the larger one, the actual error seems to be in the display engine only, if you do an export to a polygon mesh format like .obj for example that error is not displayed there. So I think you can ignore that one.

The other surface needs to be untrimmed and retrimmed to repair it, I have attached a 3DM file here where I've done that.

What version of Rhino are you using?

Hi Michael,

I use the last version of Rhino5... i see no reason to upgrade to V6.
I just bought Ablibre Design Expert... its good to have a parametric modeller.

Could you add a function to display the inner surface in a different color? Like in Rhino?
or naked edges in a different color? This is what i find very useful in Rhino.

I have attached the step file...

Hi BlackBird, thanks for sending the file. I have put it on my list of things to investigate.

I want to have those but they aren't going to make it in for MoI v4. You can select naked edges to see where they are though, that can be done by selecting an object, then using "Details..." and at the top in the "Type:" report it will tell the number of naked edges and you can click on that label to select them.

Or also there is a script you can set up on a shortcut key here:

Keep up the good work.
