New user quick question on Moi3d v4

Good day.
I have the demo of moi3d awaiting the v4 release in order to purchase (I am visiting this site every week lol). I tried allot of software's but keep coming back to Moi3d and 3d Coat.
I have purchased a few courses for both apps. also purchased 3dcoat version for 3d printing so now I am committed and I do not want to model something If I cannot make it. I do carpentry and metal fabrication as hobby and the time has come to take my hobbies to the next level.
Bought a 3d printer it is up and running and the plan is to purchase an avid cnc 4x8' next year.

Does the upcoming moi3d can extrude from an image? like this> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zszE6YT4k4

Will image tracing be possible?

And when is it going to be released?

Only those 2 things I will need, dimensions will be added so Moi will be able to do almost everything I need.

Thank you!

Dimension is yet existing! ;)

By script by Max Smirnov for the V3, beta V4 http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=7403.133
and / or in native by Michael in the beta V4! ;)

Maybe Heightmap by Max Smirnov can help you for an image ? (and take a look at the message 1 on the same thread)

Hi matadem,

No, not really - MoI is a type of CAD program and the geometry technology that CAD programs are based on focus on precision geometry like exact spheres and cylinders, not things with rough small details. Something like that is better suited for polygon mesh type geometry rather than CAD spline surface geometry.

> Will image tracing be possible?

It's possible to bring in an image as a background bitmap as a reference to draw over. You can do that with the View > Image command.

> And when is it going to be released?

As soon as the last area of work is complete, I'm still finishing up dimension text export to PDF format.

Thanks,
- Michael

Hi Matadem,

MOI doesn't able to do an automatic image tracing as seen in your video.

But, you have two possibilities to have the same thing as in the video.

For logo, personnaly, I do the image tracing with Inkscape which is very good to do it (free and opensource).
Next I export it from Inkscape in pdf format.
MOI3D is able to import pdf format and you will have very good results.
At the end, you could extrude as you wanted.

example :

Another possibility is to use the Max's plugin named "heightmap".
You use a bitmap as grayscale map and heightmap do a serie of curves.
WARNING, the program create a curve (or point) for each pixel in X or/and Y.
Next you could loft curves.
At the end you have to cut unnecessary parts.

You have to choose... But first possibility is best for logos and second is used for more complexe (and less sharp) sources/results.

Good day.
Yes probably I will use inkscape since Affinity designer does not have image tracing option.

The heightmap seems like a good option aswell!

When I saw this technique from 3dcoat I thought this is a great time saver and Moi3d should have this aswell
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4pEdxqKk9c not need to watch the whole video.. the technique is between 4:15 and 4:30min.

Thanks for the info ...awaiting the release as I have many mechanical parts to make :D

Hi Matadem,

re:

Deriving objects directly from bitmaps like that is more suited to a program like 3dcoat where objects are made up of a kind of soup of lots of little tiny elements like little triangles or voxels.

CAD programs like MoI work with a much different kind of geometry, objects in MoI are made out of NURBS surfaces which are more like broad curved sheets. That kind of geometry definition does not match up well with that type of technique you saw there. It is good in different types of things though like making an accurate model made up of exact spheres and cylinders and such rather than a lot of little elements.

Different programs can use pretty different ways to represent objects and techniques used in one type of environment are not always applicable in a different environment.

Hi Matadem,

3dcoats embossing will be far better and the place you want to do that....

Your cnc package may have the bitmap tracing you are looking for too...... I guess it depends on what you go with....
