Cloth folds? With MoI?

Hello everyone, long time lurker, first time poster, with a bit of an unusual question.

I am currently in the process of making some parts for wargame miniatures to be printed, and I'm absolutely in love with Moment of Inspiration because it's a very intuitive piece of software even someone like me, without any background in 3D modeling, can use in a competent way. Over the course of my experimentation, I have bumped into something of a problem however, namely the fact that some of the parts I need to make are supposed to represent objects made of cloth, and that means folds. I have been trying to simulate these using the Network tool, with the following result:

While it's doable, it's a bit of a hit or miss when it comes to controlling the folds in terms of size and shape, and is pretty tedious to boot. My question is, are there other, better ways to do what I need using MoI? And before you ask, I couldn't sculpt my way out of a wet paper bag, so MoI it is.

Thank you very much in advance, any help will be appreciated!

Hi Marcin, cloth is kind of a poor fit with a precision oriented CAD program like MoI but something folded mostly in just one direction like curtains can be managed.

Instead of a network, try a loft between 2 squiggles, like shown here:

Else you have this old one who can be used for some simulation of cloth! ;)

Can someone test if this works with MoI ver 4?

I installed what I believe is the latest version of the Cloth script:

http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=6514.49

Maybe I just don't know how to use it. I have a Plane with a Sphere underneath.

When I run the script, it won't let me change the grid size. I do get the full menu with the 12 sliders. Press Done to start and the wheel has been spinning for over 10 minutes.

Hi Ed,

Max's latest files are here:
http://moi.maxsm.net/files/scripts

http://moi.maxsm.net/files/scripts/Cloth.v.0.97.2017.11.23.zip

Yes, it works on MoI3d January Beta 4.

Start script.
Select Plane - Done
Set Grid set - default Done
Select Sphere as anchor point. - Done.
Long menu appears. default - Done.
Animation starts.
Amazing to watch.

Thanks guys - That version works great.

This is a timely subject for me because I've been experimenting making cloth in MoI as a foundation to place my rings on for rendering. Keyshot has a new procedural material called Real Cloth that I'm experimenting with.

I completely forgot about this script and have been using the HeightMap script (also by Max) to generate the cloth from a 16 x 16 pixel gray scale image I "paint" in Affinity Photo. I like the Cloth script better :)

I'll post some images when I get back to that project. Currently I'm wrapping up a MoI 1950's Custom Pickup Truck tutorial.

Thank you for the suggestions, everyone! I'll experiment with lofts, maybe I'll make something palatable, especially since I'm dealing with pretty small and simple objects. Sculpting what I need would probably be easier for someone who's good at it, but well, that wet paper bag thing wasn't an exaggeration.

I think Michael's suggestion works great, and allows maximum artistic control. A bunch of free-form sketch lines, Loft, and then 'show points', and then you have an interactive view of the cloth and you can 'art direct' while moving the points around.
