Hi,

I am trying to import an *ai file save from MOI into Indesign 3. Does not work.
Anyone of you managed succesfully to do so ? Any tips ? Thanks

There are 2 options:
1. Save your MoI file as pdf and import in Indesign
or
2. Import/open your MoI-ai-file in Illustrator and save this very file in Illustrator 8-format !
This can now be imported/placed into Indesign.

I tried the PDF version. But when I import a PDF into Indesign
I get do not get a vector shape, is that right ?
Say I exported a triangle and I opened it in ID as PDF.
When I try to fill the triangle with a fill color the whole
page ist filled but not the triangle ...

Absolutly no problem with the triology Affinity (Photo, Designer, Publisher)
And the price is some attractive during the covid Period ! (27€99 each for life ! )
(10€ 99 for Ipad for Photo & Designer)

Moi PDF (vector) works like a charm in the 2 ways! ;)

So I found out the following :

I can copy paste form MOI to Illustrator - and the form Illustratot to Indesign.

But unfirtunately not directly MOI to Indesign.

The *ai. exported from MOI seems to be different form the *ai exported from Illustrator ?!

I believe that the Moi's Ai is an old format version...
why not use the PDF export ?

Hi Tom, the AI file that MoI generates is in an old AI8 format. I guess InDesign does not support that old version and only supports the newer kind that Illustrator will export.

Around AI version 9 the AI format underwent a big change. V8 and earlier was similar to a limited subset of EPS. The newer style is actually a PDF file with an additional embedded copy of the file in Illustrator's private format.

Unfortunately it is not feasible for MoI to export the new kind because Adobe has not made any documentation on how that v9 embedded Illustrator data is structured. The only file format specification available is on the EPS-like AI8 format.

One thing you might try is to export to PDF format and then change the file extension to .AI instead. That will then be closer in structure to an AI9+ type AI file but it will be missing the additional Illustrator specific data in it. But maybe it will be handled differently by InDesign than the PDF import.

That seems odd that Indesign treats .AI and .PDF files differently, I don't know why they would only support importing vectors from one and not the other, that would be something you would have to ask Adobe about. I see some articles mention that Indesign can have problems with slow performance with vector content so maybe it has something to do with that.

unfortunately does not change a bad import.

I thin the quickest solution is to copypaste from MOI to Illustrator
and from there to Indesign.

So your Indesign is not very permissive! :)
