import OBJ

Hi,

I was searching the forum for a way to import obj into MoI, and found some entries that mention it can be done in V4, but not really how to and what is needed. So I downloaded the beta, but obj is not in the list of import formats. does it need an extra plugin? where can I find a tut or user manual for V4?
Thanks
wim

Hi Wim, the new OBJ importer in v4 is not a general purpose importer that can read in any type of OBJ file, it is for converting OBJ files that are set up for sub-d smoothing.

So if you have a sub-d model you can use that to convert it to a smooth NURBS surface model in MoI.

If your OBJ file just contains regular polygon mesh objects and not ones set up for sub-d smoothing, that type of data is not good to import into MoI.

There isn't one yet, I'll be working on that once the last beta is finished.

Ok Tnx Michael, my intention was to import a specific custom sized bolt thread which I have as stl only, and redraw it in MoI. but as I understand it (and just tested a few minutes ago) the original shape is lost and turned into subd smoothed geometry.
So I will have to screen dump it in Blender and import the image I guess.

You have also an STL importer so you must not loose the original shape... ;)

Yep so seems maybe you will have a better result in "Quadriangulate" with some third party first before importation! ;)
Maybe this free one! ;)

The STL import one only supports ascii type STL files, not binary ones.
