Viewport causing an app hang

I'm currently experiencing an extremely inconvenient array of crashes (hangs) when i switch between viewports within MoI.

It looks like I can only swap my viewports ~30 before the application hangs and makes it very difficult to work. I'm not exactly sure it's 100% a fault of MoI's since I can't seem to identify anyone else having this issue, however MoI is the only application I've used regularly where this is even an occurrence.

This didn't start becoming an issue until I updated both Windows and my Graphics driver in the middle of January.

Specs, if it helps:
Windows 10 Pro
Version 1903
OS build 18362.592
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X 16-Core Processor 3.50GHz
64GB Ram
GeForce RTX 2080 Ti

Edit: the MoI versions i'm experiencing this crash in may help:
4.0 Beta Jan-22-2020
4.0 Beta Oct-10-2019

If i need to supply anyone with any other information, I'd be happy to provide whatever I can. Crash logs may be difficult since the app doesn't crash, it just hangs. funnily enough, the app seems to still function, the UI just refuses to want to be refreshed/rendered. I can still pull up the save menu via hotkeys which has been helpful, but it's still incredibly inconvenient.

HI LocusDio, it's likely to be a video driver bug. Probably the first thing to try is to see if there is any newer driver available, check directly at the Nvidia web site, not through Windows Update.

If there isn't then another thing that might help would be to try rolling back your video driver, see if there is an option as described here:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/driver-rollback/
and also here:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/60478-roll-back-driver-previous-version-windows-10-a.html

Another thing you can try is in MoI go to Options > General and push the "Edit .ini file" button. Inside moi.ini find the line inside the [View] section that says DisplayThreadLimit= and set it to DisplayThreadLimit=1 .

Do any of those things make any difference?

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, Michael. I do appreciate it.

Unfortunately I tried every one of those steps and the problem persists.

I first tried setting the DisplayThreadLimit to 1 before rolling back, unfortunately it was of no use both before, and after the rollback.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help resolve my issue.

Hi LocusDio, the only other thing I can think of is to try an older video driver, I think you can get older ones from here:
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

Hopefully a new video driver will be out soon that will fix this for you. You are the only person who has reported this problem so far.

Hey Locus,

You could give a "perform a clean install" tickbox a shot, it's an option during nvidia driver installation.

Also, you could eventually try this:
https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

before trying out a new version.

If you are experiencing weird behavior in other apps, it could be heat or psu power cap/quality related.

Good luck!

Ah, thanks nameless. Much appreciated.

I'll give those things a shot, and keep an eye out for my hardware.

Hi LocusDio, one other thing is if your computer has accumulated a lot of dust in it clean that out since that can contribute to overheating.

But yes if that was it rather than a driver problem I would expect you'd see it in other apps too.

That's an amazing rig by the way, didn't catch it the first time.

Just curious, what is your power supply for this?

I figured I'd update you guys on my situation.

I've tried all the methods and avenues that have been mentioned here, even rolling back to a driver released in November when I know I didn't have issues operating MoI, and unfortunately my problem still persists.

Like I mentioned in my original post, this problem is only happening in MoI, all the other software I use have no issues with my graphics card what-so-ever.

I don't know if this merits an even further investigation, but I'm struggling to operate MoI because of this problem. Hopefully it will get resolved but it's starting to look like I'm going to have to explore other software avenues if this keeps up any longer.

I really don't want to give up on MoI, I absolutely love this software, but it's been rendered absolutely unusable because of this issue.

Thanks again for your guys' help and suggestions.

Hi LocusDio, thanks for the update and sorry MoI isn't working for you properly.

Unfortunately right now it's doubtful that I'll be able to find a solution, maybe if someone else reports the same issue it will help to identify a pattern and find the root cause. So far though you are the only person to have seen this problem.

Sorry for the difficulty,
- Michael

Actually one more idea just occurred to me, did you possibly install any kind of anti-virus or anti-malware packages during this recent time period when the trouble started?

No worries Michael, I completely understand your situation. I just wish I was better versed in reconciling these kinds of issues.

As far as the anti-virus situation goes, I haven't installed any new anti-virus/malware packages at all.

Thinking about going as far as a reinstall of windows on my end, but that's probably unnecessary.

I'll try to keep you posted on things I've tried as I come up with more ideas. Thanks again for all your help.

Hey LocusDio,

Just throwing a long shot, does your motherboard have any onboard graphics options and do you see anything like that in device manager in display adapters? I just thought it could be worth checking out, there is an option via the nvidia panel to choose a gpu for each application and if there were other gfx devices in your system MoI could be using a weird one.

Also, it could be worth checking out if uninstalling gpu drivers completely and letting windows run on the default display adapter driver for your card solves the issue. Or even booting into safe mode and see if MoI crashes or not.

Again, just things that popped into my head and I would try in your shoes, I do not mean to make you pointlessly jump through hoops to make MoI work.

Good luck! :|

Ah thanks for the suggestions, Nameless!

Unfortunately, I had the foresight to test exactly that in between uninstalling my drivers via the method you described a few days ago. It unfortunately was still freezing in Safe mode, without nvidia's graphics drivers installed.

I do believe that effectively rules out it being a display driver issue. I'll give it a 2nd test, though. I guess it couldn't hurt.

I don't have an onboard graphic's chip, either; my Motherboard is an Asus Rog Zenith Extreme Alpha X399. Onboard graphics were one of the bells and or whistles it didn't come equipped with.

Hi locus,
Does your issue happen on just a default "empty" file, or are you dealing with a specific file?

If it is file specific, tune the view angle to something like 40, then test.

Sorry, that's all i have...
