Help with Fillet problems and possible workaround :)

Hi guys, I am having problem filleting this long edge around the object.

I do realize this is maybe to hard for the filleting engine to calculate.

Is it there some kind of a workaround so I can get these edges smooth?
This is really important for me and my workflow.

Seems that works if you copy move piece by piece and then make your fillet (0.3 tested)

Not sure that is the good process but that works before Michael or other answers :)

here just 3 pieces: top, middle somewhere, bottom

PS As the third piece from the Top seems have something wrong

Make 1,2,4,5,6 then link as you want 2 to 4 for make the 3 ;)
(Blend... maybe some trims necessary for have same similar curves start-end)

Hi Andrey,
the back face is not flat if you trim 0.17 off the model and run planar to get back to solid the fillet works.

Hi Andrey, the fillet engine doesn't like planar faces that are fragmented into little coplanar pieces. If you tune up the model to replace the flat side with one single plane that would be better for filleting.

In your case here they're also not quite planar as well. Faces that are at a very shallow angle to each other are also difficult for filleting.

So I'd recommend same as what Barry says above to carve off a little bit of the flat side to make a single plane there. You can either use Edit > Trim + Construct > Planar or also use boolean difference to slice it with a line.

Yeah, there was something wrong with the bottom faces indeed.

So from my understanding I will try to have shapes as clean as possible before filleting.
In General as a workflow, do I fillet things as I go or, is it done as a final edge polish pass?

Its a little hard for me to understand in which circumstances the fillet function will work, or not. But I guess in most cases it is because I am doing something wrong. :D

And don't forget the fillets variable and the fact they are blocked by the maximum admissible on the path selected!

So you must make a little trimed action! ;)




Edit : in fact just make the Maximum fillet then you increase Fillet on the perimeter out of the Maximum zone! :)

Nobody has seen that! :) I was hallucinated! :)

So many more speedy and easy! :D

Yes filleting is a pretty sensitive operation and it does not take much to get it messed up. It's particularly good to have your initial curve structure to be well formed before you start constructing surfaces and solids based off of them.

You can do it as you go if the areas being filleted are isolated from other fillets. When they are going to be running into each other then they usually should be done all at the same time.
