Shell Operation Limitations

Hi,

Is the Shell operation supposed to work on tapered joined surface objects?

See attached.

I was attempting to make some ducting by lofting a pair of profiles and then giving the walls some thickness with the shell command.

While the shell command seems to work shapes with a little taper as the taper becomes more pronounced the shell results get strange.

And since shelling doesn't seem to be the correct approach what is the "correct" way to make ducts that have some wall thickness so they can be 3D printed?

Thanks again.

Frederick

Hi Frederick, there are 2 ways that shell can be used, one is to thicken an open surface and the other is on a solid.

With the thicken surface method generally the surface must be smooth. For your case here with it not being smooth try capping the ends of your shape to make it a solid (select it and use Construct > Planar), then select the faces you want to be open and then try doing Shell.

If you're still having trouble with it please post the .3dm file with your object in it.
