Like Jonah mentioned, it looks related to welding, it appears that Poser does not handle unwelded meshes very well.

See if you get a better result with welding turned on. However, this will make it more difficult to break the mesh into pieces, but that program that I posted previously should still work to break a welded mesh into pieces along sharp corners.

This wouldn't be a problem if Poser read in the vertex normal smoothing information from the OBJ file instead of creating its own smoothing information. If you get a chance to make a feature request to the Poser people, ask them to support reading in vertex normals from OBJ files so that the shading will turn out correctly regardless of whether vertices are welded or not.
