FBX export scale (and hi everyone!)

I hope everyone is doing great! It's been a while :)

I have a question about the FBX scale upon export. I am using octane standalone and I get different sizes of the same object when exporting fbx and obj through MoI.

I am trying to figure out if it is an octane issue or not or something else I am overlooking. I have set MoI to use cm as the main unit and I set the meshes to cm inside octane, but still the fbx object is a lot tinier.

Is it possible to define any fbx export parameters during export from MoI? I was wondering...

I don't believe that is something for change the size at the exportation...

But you can change the actual size of your object before export for result wanted! ;)

Maybe better post a 3dm example of the problem! ;)

Hi nameless, FBX files do contain a field in them for the unit system and MoI does set it when it writes the FBX file.

However, .obj files do not contain any such unit field in them so there isn't any way for MoI to set units on the .obj file export.

You can set a manual scale factor for .obj export under Options > Import/Export > OBJ options > "Scale factor". So if the FBX export is correct you could put in a scale factor there in MoI to have the .obj export match it.

If you are exporting something like a 1cm box to Octane using FBX and it's not coming in there at a 1cm size, then that sounds like a bug in Octane's FBX importer and I would recommend reporting it to them and sending them a sample file that does not come over in the expected size.

Hi nameless,

Octane uses two separated preferences for import OBJ and FBX. Please check Octane settings -File-Preferences-Import-FBX-unit vs OBJ.

Thank you everyone for the answers, I really appreciate it.

Hey Pilou, you will not see anything useful in the .3dm, it happens with any object.

Hey Michael! That makes sense, I will double check everything is set properly in both programs and if it persists, it's probably due to how octane handles imports. Thank you for the detailed explanation!

Hey Mik, that's the case indeed and I set both fields (fbx and obj) to be the same unit on import, that's why I was confused about the whole discrepancy.

I will look into it some more when I get back home and see if I can make sense.

Cheers! :)
