How to connect the pieces?

Hollo everyone, I am currently doing a nurbs project. But I got two problems need to be resovled.

1. As you can see in the picture A. I made the pieces by using "network" or "sweep" fuction. Just don't know how to connect the pieces seamlessly? ( picture A )

2. How to make curvy copies in proportion between two curvies? ( two yellow curies in picture B )

I know there are fuctions in Rhino can solve the problem. Just wondering are there same or similar functions in MOI?

Thanks.

Justin

Hi,

For your first question, could you post your .3dm file ?
It's easier to help you if you give us a file to test solutions.

For your second question you could use the script "Morph between curves"
explained here http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=6373.1
download it here http://moi.maxsm.net/files/

Enjoy !

Hi Justin, so often to get a smooth object it can be better to build it as one larger sweep or network instead of in pieces like that. Then it would be smooth to start with.

See here for some description of this:
http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=1398.18
http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=1398.19

For your case with it being done currently in pieces, one way to smooth it out would be to draw in a rectangle and use it to trim the surfaces so there is some empty space between them and then you can use Blend to put in a blend surface between them.

To build it as one smooth surface to start with you would need to make the curves smooth to each other, to do these points should be in a straight line so that the curves are tangent to one another, your points are slightly out of line making the curves have a sharp corner between them:

I've attached a version of your .3dm file where I've tuned up those curve points to be in a straight line in those spots which makes the curves all smooth to each other. Now you should be able to select them all and do the whole thing in one go of Network which will make a smooth surface:

Hi Justin, what method are you using for constructing your surface?

If it's with Network part of the problem there is your curves are not touching each other, so the network result is not going to have the exact same shape as any one individual curve.

But you can get a surface with the same control point structure as your curves though by selecting just 4 curves in one direction like this:

Then use Construct > Loft and set the option for Loft style = "Loose".

That will make a surface that has the same surface control point structure as your curves, and for that structure you should be able to mirror pieces as you were doing.

Or another option would be to build a flat surface with 4 x 4 control points in it and then manipulate the surface control points. See here for an example of setting that up: http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=1313.2

However, that's kind of a special case with the control point structure that you're using. In the more general case you would want to avoid making many small pieces. Instead make longer curves and then one larger surface rather than trying to build separate patches for pieces that you want to be smooth to each other. There are some links about this above in this same thread.

Hi Pilou, Blend can indeed work in several situations but usually it is best to use Blend for a transition between different shapes.

But if you're trying to make something that looks like one large sheet it is usually better to make one large surface for that rather than smaller ones.
