Hello there !

Yup MoI is still my main modeler :), every time I need to sketch / pre-model something, it's my best tool !
For this image I have used MoI to create/research interesting geometry patterns. I use this single model as a base to create an "enhanced" version in Houdini, extracting and repeating randomly pieces, and create multiple variations.
Then the scene is assembled and rendered in Clarisse.

Very cool!

But seems these "particular box buildings" pre-modeled can be also made in seconds with the free crazzy MagicaVoxel! ;)
it exports format OBJ ;)

Except this neat sloped part!

Thanks Michael,

Hi Pilou,

Well it's actually slightly more complex than just random greeble. The model in Moi is prepared with the next step in mind. I have lots of grouped elements (by name) that I don't want to change when the model is reorganized randomly in Houdini. I also do lots test (ray cast) to create bridges (extrude) so I can connect "stuffs" together after the position/repeat randomization. Finally I have to create procedure to balance high density area with low density one ... I'm not really sure I could find this kind of functionality in MagicVoxel. Beside MoI meshing is ultra clean and light, so I can also do additional poly boolean operations without facing too much troubles ;)

I'm so used to MoI than the first pattern was build in 10 minutes or so :P

Last can be * 10 in Z (but modelized by module if wanted) here not "greeble" by hands ...module was my previous image...
If you have yet 10 different modules made - you can make some crazzy things (except the neat slopes) in one minute! ;)
I will ask if existing "random module" in Magica :) Some creations yes but position of modules i don't know yet!
(they are not very technical speedy reactive like here! :)

Each program has its own funny use! :)
Free to you export to Moi, Houdini etc...(i have no more patience for the hyper powerful nodal systems :(
made on the fly reading the forum(s) ;)

Thanks Marko,

Hi Pilou,

I have the feeling this constant voxel size would give something a little bit boring, or too regular (quantitized). It's maybe a matter of taste, but I really like to find a balance between very tiny elements and larger masses. That's why I love the works from Vitally Bulgarov, like in this kitbash : https://vitalybulgarov.com/3d-kitbash/meg
I'm really far to have the recipe to reproduce this yet completely procedurally, but it's something I will continue to work on :)

Here's for example a bunch of variations based on the initial MoI pattern posted earlier.

A very interesting method to build asset based on pattern is this wave function collapse.
https://github.com/mxgmn/WaveFunctionCollapse

The first time a say this I was a little bit skeptical, mostly because I was only looking at the 2D images :P, but I start to see some really cool stuffs done in 3D too now.
I would love to play with a system like that :)

Cheers.

@PaQ
Yes Kitbach method is a killer one for epic scenes! (if you can use the elements randomly easily)

Yes your Monolith is very cool! https://www.behance.net/gallery/53179645/Monolyth

Magica will be "boring" only if your modules are little symetrical but if you take a little one no symetric module
then rotate it /them at each copy/paste/move ...sure it's by hand but like this you keep the control! ;)

Or if you use another technics : I don't see any boring here! ;)

Hi Pilou,

Well boring was maybe not the right term, I would say too regular ... like a minecraft world ?
I have done a couple images like that too, using different cubic voxel approach ... I actually like that kind of stuffs, but it wasn't the result was looking for ;)

No problem...it's just that your object on the left seemed to be made with Magica! :) (except the very few tiny slopes)

Hi PaQ and Pilou (and James and "Speedy AL2000")!

Well...even if in this 2018 I almost abandoned all 3D related stuff (because I was overwhelmed by tons and tons of tech things learned during throughout the 2016-2017) one of the things that still keeps me stick to this forum and 3D art in general, are things like you're doing lately.

Mathematically generated 3D creations like voxels and all the experiment made by Pilou are very very interesting and pleasant to the eye :)
And all the "Houdini" wonderful things by PaQ are...mind-blowing!

And also all the AMAZING EXPERIMENTS made by James and "Speedy AL2000" are awesome.

Thanks guys to keep me attached to the (for me actually) boring world of 3D modelling.

Now I fell in love again with digital hand made things, like 2D graphic and above all "digital painting and fine art" (a lots of things to study and learn)

Ciao!

Hi Marco,

to bad that 3D modeling is boring for you, but i can understand you...

If you had ZBrush you could do your 2D works, you paint, with Pixols in
a 2.5D Environment! I bet you would have lot's of fun with Pixols.

Hi Pilou,

yes, i love 3D very much. I also did Airbrush stuff in the 80's
and also commercially white metal figurines painting etc. :-)

My interest for 3D awaked in 1984 when they aired on German TV
a superb 3D presentation about the big 3D studios in the U.S.
and all the superstars from that time, like Jim Blinn, Ed Catmull etc. ;-)

And before they aired that show i also drew 3D looking stuff with my
Atari 800 XL and a graphics tablet from Atari. :-) (Wish i still had
those floppies...)

Regards
Stefan

Hi Stefan!

@You: "Too bad..."

No my friend, don't worry :)
I'm not saying that I have totally swiped out 3D CG from my life.
It's been one of my personal interest for decades, since the Amiga 500!

And during the last 15 years I've played more or less seriously with almost any 3D modelling approach available to the consumer market:
polygons, subdivision surface, voxels, nurbs, generative modelling, sculpting (also in 2.5D), software for terraforming, realtime rendering, etc...

Clearly I'm saying this from the point of view of an (advanced) amateur, not a professional.
My main job is software developing.

But as I've said in my previous message, especially during 2015-2016-2017 I've tested, studied, learned, tried, so many things related to 3D software that in this 2018 (and still now) I'm very overwhelmed.

Furthermore at the same time I rediscovered the beauty of fine art and 2D digital painting with software like Procreate (iPad Pro) and Affinity Photo/Designer.
And now I find that this kind of computer graphic is much much more expressive for me.

Playing with a blank canvas and leveraging only on my hands and a digital pencil, without any kind of bashing or "help" (from 3D modelling) is much more exciting for me.

With digital painting now I feel that I can learn so many things, most of them really useful also in a 3D environment.

This is why now I decided to almost abandon 3D stuff and spending my (very limited) free time to work and strive with digital painting and fine art.

But anyway I still love Moi3D and 3DCoat and also the new Blender 2.8 and I hope in the near future to put again my hands on the 3D modelling/rendering.

Ciao :)
