Doubts and a couple of questions about v4 beta...Please answer me

Hi everyone.
I've been away from here for a while, but now I'm back.

I use Moi v3 on OS X (El Capitan) v10.11 late 2015 and a short time ago I downloaded the Moi v4 beta Oct-17-2018 and it works well.
I state that I am only a self-taught 3D enthusiast ... please be patient!

I'm new to the rendering topic (never done it before) and I'm starting to practice with KeyShot6.
This app. accepts however both .3dm and .obj files.
So ... which is better to export? I mean: what's the difference?
What about the right settings in Moi for rendering in KS6?
Is there a KS6 plug-in for Moi v4 beta? (I don’t think so necessary anyway).
Are there any plug-in that could be useful to me? Where to find it?
I customized the UI Moi v3 with GUI Builder.app; does it works with v4 beta too?
And if not, where can I find the version that works?
What is this new tool called SubD? What is it for? How does it works?Any usefull topic about it in the forum?
I would like to design the interior of a small room or a small apartment: is it possile with v4 beta?
How much can a Moi file dedicated to small interior design projects weigh? I would not use AutoCAD ... too difficult and expensive.

Thank you for giving me a little help.

Marco from Italy

.3dm files contain NURBS surfaces while .obj files will contain polygons. You could try either one but often times .3dm importers in rendering programs only work with .3dm files from Rhino. I'm not sure what the level of support is in KeyShot. If it does not work well then use .obj format with "Output: Quads & Triangles" in the meshing options dialog.

> What about the right settings in Moi for rendering in KS6?

It depends on what you are doing, like if you are going to be close in on an object you will want to generate more polygons when you do the export from MoI by moving the slider to the right in the meshing option dialog.

> Is there a KS6 plug-in for Moi v4 beta? (I don’t think so necessary anyway).

No, I don't think there is any KS6 plug-in for MoI.

> Are there any plug-in that could be useful to me? Where to find it?

I don't know of any plug-ins that would be useful for using MoI with KeyShot.

> I customized the UI Moi v3 with GUI Builder.app; does it works with v4 beta too?

No I don't think it is compatible with v4 yet.

> And if not, where can I find the version that works?

I don't think there is any version for v4 currently.

SubD is a different method of constructing objects, used by polygon modeling programs. The new feature in MoI acts as a bridge between those kinds of polygon modeling programs and MoI, allowing you to open .obj files with SubD content into MoI. See here for some examples on SubD modeling:

Yes.

There is no specific limit to the largest file size, it depends on a lot of different factors like what kind of objects you have and what kind of machine and video card you are using.

I use Keyshot 6 as my renderer, and I have found that the best format for importing into it is STEP, which also preserves the vectors, but seems to load many times faster than 3dm. I’ve never actually loaded a 3dm file fully into KS as it takes so long and nothing seems to happen, so I can’t verify if it works.

Obj files load quickly, as there are fewer calculations needed, but I find that the artifacts of having made surfaces into polygons are often very visible in KS shadow calculations or transparent materials, even in high-poly files, so STEP is far better if you have it available. It always looks smooth and exactly as intended, save for some occasional glitches I have encountered, especially when working on complex surface objects that have been lofted and then twisted. The same glitches have shown up in the Obj exports, too, so I don’t think that’s a STEP issue, but rather some of the data from MoI being misinterpreted by KS.

Hi Artistical,

(I am just a MoI user)
I have Keyshot 6 Pro version, which directly opens .3dm files, promptly, no need to import them.
I believe that there are other (less expensive) versions of Keyshot which do not open the .3dm files,
so that other import formats must be used...
