Modeling question regarding solid deformations to a curve

Hello!

Just wanted to say hi, introduce myself, thank the developer for an incredible piece of software and also see if there was some advice on a modeling issue I'm trying to work through.

I came from polygon modeling background and started using MOI last month ( purchased the second my trial expired ) - MOI3D has made it so that I actually enjoy the process of modeling again. We have a small film-making and VFX studio in Southern California, my partner uses Rhino and I would use C4D/Modo, both great programs for what they do but I was always a bit envious of my partners ability to rapidly create complex models in Rhino. I tried it out but found I didn't really enjoy using the software. Then I discovered MOI3D and it's been love at first sight.

I am struggling with how to create a certain shape and I am sure it's probably trivial for many of you, and more to do with my not understanding a certain tools workflow.

Essentially I am making a span of flexible tubing that has some surface detail - this tube needs to follow a free form curve - for instance perhaps a helix that's been joined with free-forms at both ends. I have attached two screenshots of the model in progress. The tube is just to the right of the respirator. This is not the actual length of the span but a small section of what the longer span of tubing would look like.

In C4D for instance I would make the length of tubing then do a spline wrap deformation on whatever spline curve I had created and the polygons would wrap to that spline. I think in MOI3D it might be the flow tool but I have yet to get it to work.

Thank you for your help!

Hi Jordan,

The FLOW command would seem to be the tool to use.

The length of the "helix" should match the length of the base curve, equal in length to the tube...

It will be interesting to see how the tube deforms, versus how it deforms in the physical world.

Flow is used in the Chain script.

If it's just for image/animation and curve has reasonnable angles maybe Transform/ Array a module along a Curve is sufficient ? (Instantaneous)

Just doodling with free filters :)

modeled a helix with tangent ends to centerline.
flowed curve to curve to generate helix curve path.
unwrapped new helix curve.
modeled solid to fit length.
flowed.

(Note: Will remove 3dm model soon. File size is big and need storage)
