Are you looking for commercial software or free tools.

If you're after commercial software there are a lot available. It then depends on your budget. Cinema 4D is one of them.
If you want to animate with free (or open source software), then check Blender (www.blender.org).

If you really want genuine power check out Caligari trueSpace7.51

Here's the sale page:

http://www.caligari.com/store/special/Labor07.html

Product Comparison page:

http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts75/Brochure/Comparison_tables.asp?Cate=BProducts&SubCate=ComparisonTables

And a couple of Boning and Modeling pages:

http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts7/Brochure/modeling.asp?Cate=BModeling_polyhedra

This new product is so powerful it will amaze you. I have it and would never switch to anything else for high-end modeling, vray rendering, interactive online scene development, you name it, this does it all very well.

I'm sorry but unless I'm reading it wrong, for $500 I'd go with XSI Foundation and use a package that pretty much an industry standard...

Even Carrara 5 Pro (or now v6 Pro) might be a better bang for the buck.

Granted, I used TS from v1 up till about v4.3 (or something like that) and it was cool, I LEARNED 3D using that package but I'll admit there are also things I don't like about Caligari as a business and how they do stuff...
