Hi Marco,

> If the time is a key, this method is not good at all.

I prefer quality over quantity and if i need super duper fast renderings
i can use a french Supercomputer... :-)

> You can get better results in terms of time and also, is some circumstances, in terms of quality,
> if you use a software like Affinity Photo or others to apply a post process effect to the rendered images.

Since this is a rendering tips and tricks thread it would be helpful for the general audience if you could
show us an example (original with some aliasing and one reworked with Affinity Photo).

Best regards
Stefan

Hi Karsten,

I hadn't heard of CADrays yet, thanks, I'll check it out.

Also interesting is AMD Radeon ProRender. Fully free and supported by a number of 3D editors, including Blender and Maya. It uses OpenCL, so it utilizes rendering power of both CPU and GPU.

Hello Metin,

thanks for the link!
565MB download for the ProRender for linux. There was a time that a rendering tool fits to 3 3 1/4" disks with 1.4MB ... okay 25 years ago!

Hi Karsten,

if you are looking for a small (Windows) production renderer maybe the famous japanese Redqueen
Renderer is something for you. It requires editing text files, in order to use this little and fast render
engine.

and some gallery images:

Hi Karsten and Stefan,

Karsten: Yeah, good old times when everything fitted on a few diskettes. :) Amiga rules! :D

Stefan: Wow, Redqueen's results looks great. It's a pity that the coder won't update it anymore, because he's employed by Solid Angle, creators of the Arnold renderer.

Regards,

— Metin

Hi everyone!

Instant Light (realtime render engine), an amazing companion for Moi and 3D-Coat, has been updated to 1.5.11 stable beta!

On my Gtx 1080 Ti it has superb realtime performance.

Ciao!

Hi Finema.

Actually it's a standalone software.

It's a specialized package for GPU bound realtime unbiased and biased renderings.

Hi Finema.

Here's where you can download the latest official beta

https://www.instantlightrt.com/try-buy.html

Click on "Download Official Release Version 1.5.11" and you will be redirected to their Google Drive

Just keep in minds these things :

1) after downloaded, for a correct installation run the installation exe as "Administrator"

2) The internal code of this software uses the DirectX 11+ routines very deeply so in order to get full access to all low-level optimization
you must run the software in Administrator mode ("Run as Administrator")

3) This realtime render engine it's very powerful but has a "non standard" UI, a little bit strange.
Follow the basic tutorials on their Youtube channel.
Once you learn the foundation and its philosophy then the fun begins :)

4) Instant Light pushes your GPU to its limit and it requires a powerful GPU.
From Gtx 900 series and up you should get very good performance.
With my Gtx 1080 Ti this software is amazing.
On my laptop with an old Quadro K3100M (768 cuda and 4GB of ram) it's only "sufficient"

Hope this help.

Ciao!

Hello Finema.

Yes. Mac version is on the road.

But...if you can put your hands on a GPU powered windows machine, take a ride with the trial version of IL.
It's worth it.

As I said, and i want to be clear about this point, the software is still young and it is in advanced beta, so little bugs or "strange behaviors" still occurs,
and the IL team is working hard on these things.
But, believe me, when it comes to realtime rendering I can say that I never seen anything like this.

Absurd and crazy realtime engine with STRT unbiased and global illumination with stunning quality!!

I think it's one the perfect companions for Moi and 3DCoat.

In these days I'm in contact with the IL team to ask them to produce new series of tutorials for beginners,
because, as I said, one of the things that is difficult about IL is its philosophy, how it works.

But when you understand its foundation it's like a video game :)

Ciao and....Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Hello, I don't mind sharing my experience as well.
I've always used plugins due to the amount of control you can get by using them in complete software packages (such as c4d, 3dsmax or blender). I am demanding, so stuff like advanced uvwmapping, unwrapping, light\materials workflow are a must to me.
I never ever stuck with Standalone software for rendering due to the lack of workflow. I find them unusable and uncomfortable. I want everything in a single application.

I started out with VRay 11 years ago, few years ago I tried Corona-Renderer (beautiful CPU renderer) and Octane, and now I completely switched to this new GPU renderer called FStormRender. Best choice ever. It is simple, it is fast and produces unbelievably realistic results.

So my two cents:
Best CPU renderer: Corona Render
Best GPU renderer: FStormRender
Best Standalone renderer: Keyshot
Best Realtime Standalone renderer: Lumion if you don't care, otherwise Unreal Engine 4

Merry Christmas and happy new year to everyone!

M.

Just as a note on here (as I feel it's a duty to look out for good developers) - re: FStorm Render, it has been concluded by NZ courts that Kozlov did, in fact, steal Octane Render's source code while he was employed at OTOY.

So I guess you have to look inside yourself a little if you are going to support this product!

Merry Xmas, anyway!
