Consider using Google's Guetzli Encoder when posting images. ;-)

Hi all,

because we all like to post our images in high-quality, i assume, i came a while ago
Google's new Guetzli jpeg Encoder, which helps us all to save a lot of bytes, without
loosing to much, if any, visual quality of an image.

Here's a short test of mine:

bw_final.png = 878.279 Byte (OS X preview)

bw_final2.png = 647.629 Byte (run through pngcrush)

bw_final3.jpg = 188.445 Byte (pngcrushed image run through Guetzli)

Article:
http://www.theverge.com/2017/3/17/14957272/google-jpeg-encoder-new-guetzli-smaller-faster

Source Code:
https://github.com/google/guetzli

Note: Guetzli consumes lot's of memory and takes also time to encode an image, but the results
are imho worthwhile.

Regards
Stefan

...and for squeezing other attachments like .zip we could also consider Google's
Brotli or Zopfli file compressors. ;-)

Hi Pilou,

i was talking about "high-quality"... So please try again with 100% instead of 90%.

When i use 100%, depending on the software i use, i get between 300+K and 500+K.

Stefan

Cool, that sounds good.

O.k. another test with Google's Zopfli, in case people
don't like jpeg...

Same image with Photoshop as .png = 736.661 Byte
then pngcrush = 660.358 Byte
and pngcrushed image used with Zopfli = 631.517 Byte

Hi Pilou,

i wonder if you or anybody else can open also
my attachment without any problems. I used also
Google's Zopfli to compress the file instead
of .zip. Maybe i use it too in the future for
attachments if everybody can open it.

Zip file = 909.779 Byte
Zopfli = 895.999 Byte

O.k. Pilou, i checked the --help entry and Guetzli defaults to 95%...

With 100% it would be 476.217 Byte
and with 90%, like you did, it would be 84.770 Byte.

I'm curious now what you would have with 95%?

You must have a very good encoder for Windows! :-)

P.S. just found ImageOptim for Mac, wich contains
Zopfli too. https://imageoptim.com/mac

If you speak about BatWing attachment no problem to uncompress with 7Zip! :)
