I used a newer toolkit from 3Dconnexion, so you may need to install a newer driver for it to work right. Try getting the newest driver from here: http://www.3dconnexion.com/support/4a1.php

I think that the newer drivers will add the necessary support.

Please let me know if that still doesn't work.

Hi Michael,

I am not accustomed to using space navigator, but we have Spaceball 4000 FLX at work so I downloaded the latest driver for 4000 series (3DxSoftware 2.8.2) and installed it. However, I am not able to start it up. In Rhino, it works fine.
Anyway, I can do without 3D navigator...

Hi Petr, I think it is possible that the new API that I used (and that 3Dconnexion actually encouraged developers to use) only works with USB devices. If your Spaceball uses the older style serial interface I think it doesn't work.

It would be nice if 3Dconnexion would provide support for their new API with these devices. I'll ask what their plans are for that.

Hi Petr, I asked the 3Dconnexion guys and they said that model is pretty old, they have discontinued driver development for it years ago.

However, they think that if you manually install the newer SDK layer it should work.

To do this, unzip the attached TDxInput.dll and copy it somewhere to your hard drive, maybe a good spot would be the place in \Program files where other 3Dconnexion software went.

Then from a command prompt, go to that directory and type in:
regsvr32 tdxinput.dll

That will install their newer SDK layer which MoI uses, and it is supposed to be able to talk to the older hardware, please let me know if that doesn't work and I will ask them what's up.

Hi Michael,

Yes, our "greasy ball" is pretty old... hehe... and nobody seems to want it on the table.
Nevertheless, with new SDK layer installed works perfect! Thanks.

Great! I have put in a request for them to make some kind of installer from 3dconnexion for putting the new SDK layer on older devices. I hope they will do that because it is kind of strange to need to manually install it.

They haven't had this new SDK for very long yet, so I guess a few details like this have not really been thought out yet.
