Crash

Michael, out of the blue Moi 3.0 has started crashing.
I'm running Windows 10 64 bit and have 8GB of RAM.
My graphics card is AMD Radeon HD 7800 series
I've made no hardware change for many months.
The crashing has been going on for a while - a couple of weeks. It was occurring before Windows 10 Anniversary update and following the update.
I've kept an eye on CPU usage and Memory usage and noticed nothing unusual. Neither show any peaks at crash time.
When a crash occurs it is restricted to that instance of Moi. Any other Moi instance seems unaffected.
When the crash occurs there is a Windows notification but no Moi notification.
The Moi 3.0 program folder does NOT contain any crash reports.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Moi 3.0 though perhaps an especially thorough uninstall is required?

I'm limping along doing very frequent incremental saves.
Time between crashes is 10 to 30 minutes approximately.
Program instance does not crash if there is no activity in that instance.

Hope this is any easy fix...

Mike.

Hi Mike, typically that type of random instability is caused by a buggy video driver, most likely your video driver was updated right before the crashes started happening. Your best bet is to see if you can roll back to an earlier version of the driver until some future update fixes the bug in the current one.

MoI doesn't install files all over your hard drive so there isn't really any type of "more thorough" uninstall to do, the only thing you could do in addition to an uninstall would be to delete your moi.ini file (found under %AppData%\Moi\moi.ini , make a backup before deleting it) so it will get recreated with all default values.

You might also check in your %temp% folder to see if there are any crash reports there, they would be files named moi_report1.zip, moi_report2.zip - MoI will write crash dumps there if it's unable to write to the program folder.

Thanks, Michael.

Unfortunately I've still got the problem.

I uninstalled the graphics card driver and the installed one dated December 2015.
Still got crashes.

I renamed the moi.ini file moi.ini.old and replaced it with Chipp Walter's moi.ini file.
Still crashing.

I've searched all drives with the excellent Everything search program (Void Tools) - no sign of moi_report*.*

As you seem pretty sure that it's likely to do with the graphics card it might be worth trying uninstalling the graphic drivers again and running for a while without the card at all?
On the other hand it's only Moi that's crashing...

What do you think?

Mike.

I have found the Windows error reports.
I've attached one of them in case it helps.

Hi Mike, I'll take a look a the error report later today, thanks for sending that.

Did you possibly recently install any new anti-virus or anti-spyware type software recently? Or any other type of system utility software?

No, Michael, I've not installed any program of that sort.

Just run a full scan which picked up two trojans and another item of concern.

Removed those, naturally.

Won't be able to use this machine much today as we have a planned power outage in the building from 9.00 am until 4 pm.

Hi Mike, so looking at the crash report it looks like there are some dlls being loaded into MoI's process from applications named PlayTV and Raptr, it looks like those may be hooking into some display services and you might try disabling those to see if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

Both now uninstalled - they seem to have been bundled with the graphics card drivers.

Tomorrow will show if that's fixed the issue.

Happiness.

That seems to have done the trick. Haven't had a crash since uninstalling those two programs.

Thank you very much for your help.

Mike.

Hi freename, what operating system are you running on? Also does any dialog box show when the crash happens?

Hi freename, on Windows, MoI will first try to write the crash dump file to the same directory where MoI.exe is at, but if it doesn't have write access there (which is likely unless you've set it to "Run as Administrator"), it will instead use the temp directory which is whatever your %TMP% environment variable set to. You can go there by pressing the Win key to bring up the start menu and then type in %TMP% and push enter. The files would be named moi_report1.zip, moi_report2.zip, etc...

But if it's MoI's own code that is crashing a dialog should normally be displayed that has the path in it. The main ways that you would not get any crash dialog would be if it's a crash in the video driver or a crash due to running out of memory.

I'd recommend updating your video driver to the current version and see if that helps.

Also if you are running any sort of Anti-Virus software try temporarily disabling that and see if that has any effect.

I already checked %TMP% folder but there is no any moi_report1.zip or moi_report2.zip file. Also I tested running MoI with switching antivirus protection off but MoI has been still crashed. Strange is that when MoI crashed I am able to see MoI runnign process in task manager in processes card. I started MoI two times and two times crashed but I see MoI two times in processes card in task manager...like the MoI is running on the background.

In case of my memory I have 16GB and my system using almost 4GB. I checked this but it is not possible.

When I want to restart my PC I see MoI message about save or not save current work. That is also strange.

Hi freename, when does the crash happen, is it immediately on startup or after a little while?

Hi freename, your installation may be damaged, please e-mail me your V3 license key at moi@moi3d.com and I can set you up with a new download of the installer.

Hi freename, well the main way that what you describe can happen is from running a cracked version. I don't know of any way that it could happen with the trial version. So make sure you're getting the real trial version from http://moi3d.com/download.htm and not from somewhere else.

There is an educational discount version which you can order from Studica here: http://studica.com/moi3d
