Hi Micahel,

I guess that you are very busy, so I'm sorry to bother you with my last question,
but when you have some garbage time, please read my previous post http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=8090.1,
regarding my investigations in order to buy a good Polygonal-SDS modeler under 200$ to couple with Moi.

I think that your advice will be very useful for me.

Meanwhile, I wish to thank Pilou and other guys that have already answered :)

Nice day,

- Marco (mkdm)

Hi glmr,

...OK...but the problem is that its developing has ENDED.

I want to buy a software that is in active development.

Anyway, thanks.

IMP www.imp4mac.com The developes recently got a job at AMD as Graphics Software Engineer https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-giannopoulos-80a17583

So I’m not sure if he is planning to develop further considering his new position etc. The toolset is limited but it works as advertised.

I was also imprest with viewport performance, in some cases it did put Modo to shame. Really sad considering Modo is been in development for over a decade & IMP is a $30 app.

I did read it, but sorry I just couldn't think of anything more to add than what you and others have already mentioned. You might give Metasequoia a try: http://www.metaseq.net/en/download.html .

A lot of the more heavily used sub-d modeling programs out there are part of a larger DCC package including stuff like rendering and animation too and are a lot more than $200, like Maya, Modo, LightWave, Cinema4D, 3DS Max.

I do not myself use a sub-d modeling program regularly so I'd rely on other's advice more than mine for this.

Marco Im not sure if you are aware of Rhino WIP Subdivision Surface Project https://discourse.mcneel.com/c/serengeti/sub-d

I thought Ill mention it since you also use Rhino. Its at early stages but very promising.

Even Silo is not more evolutive, it's yet a mature program! ;)

Glen Southern a modeling master has made some master pieces with it! ;)

Hi adamio,

Thanks for your reply.

Well, I must admit that I already knew Rhino SDS project, and i made some tests with Rhino V6 Wip version,
but I you have to say that McNeel said the truth :(

Here's a couple of quotes of John_Brock at McNeel's forum :

"The SubD project is in the very early stages of development. It's just barely good enough to "throw it over the wall" to see if we're on the right track. That's how we get users involved in the development process. We are nowhere near the stage when tutorials are written. It isn't likely to be in V6. It will probably live in the WIP for a couple of releases before it's considered useful."

"A full Sub-D tool is a bigger project than you think. I don't expect it to be fully functioning for V7 either, but as we add the pieces and parts, they will be in the WIP and will progress."

Anyway, thanks for your suggestion.

Thanks for your frankness. Much appreciated :)

Regarding Metasequoia i must admit that I've never heard of it before...

Some minutes ago i downloaded the V4 trial version and I gave it a quick look.
What to say...seems to be very particular but as a first approach, I'm not so sure about it.

But i will give it a chance.

Thanks again and i wish you the best in your job!

Ciao.

Maya LT is about 30$/month ... I hate subscription, and I'm not fan of big corporate, but the price/quality ratio for this one is difficult to beat.

Hi Pilou,

Thanks for the link to Glen Southern's tutorials.
I already knew them :)

Yes, with no dubt Silo is a mature software, but for me, comparison to NVIL it lacks in, at least, to main areas :

1) NVIL has the best tools for working with Edge creasing.

2) NVIL seems to be under very active development.

Anyway, thanks a lot, I appreciate your concern.

Ciao.

Sure it's more funny to code new thing or adapt old one!
NVil --> Rocket! You can't type on two keyboards on the same time! ;)

Hi Pilou,

I'm testing Rocket3F and NVIL too...

Rocket3F seems to be a good modeler and i know that it is only at early beta stage, but there's at least three things that
don't convince me :

1) For the moment it misses too many features of its "father" NVIL

2) Although Samardac, on the Rocket3F forum and on NVIL forum, says that Rocket3F is a NEW product
that is separate from NVIL, i must say that this statement to be inaccurate.
For the moment Rocket3F seems nothing more then a NVIL with a make-up.

In fact i tried to run Rocket3F using all the configurations files of NVIL and...surprise....in front of me
I saw NVIL without the menu!!!

This thing confuses me and it doesn't make a good impression...

Certainly its workflow seems to be very, very good, like Moi, and this is a very important feature.

3) Like NVIL, on my laptop (i7 4790K 4.4 Ghz 32 Gb Ram, Nvidia Quadro K3100M 768 cores), it present the same
strange behavior. That is, an high and unjustified use of Cpu.
When i do any operation that involve the Rocket3F's viewport, the Cpu usage always jump to 15-22%,
and my laptop cooler always keep pumping.
Very annoying thing !
Silo for example is completely silent....

Nice day.

Hi Mik (MIKULAS) and Pilou,

and thanks a lot for your suggestions.

Yea...I already knew all this products : MeshMixer, NeoBarok, etc...etc...
and I currently, often or occasionally, use all of them.

But I think that all those products, although they are with no doubt very powerful and very useful for some "exotic" or particular situations,
they can't be used for "standard" Poly/SDS modelling.
They can be rather a good companion to couple with a main modelling software.

For example i also use the fantastic MagicaVoxel (https://voxel.codeplex.com/), but it could never be my main modelling package...

Anyway, thanks to all.

Ciao.
