Importing 2d surface for extrusion

I am new to Moi and challenged to convert and see my 2d surfaces in moi.
Pictures captured by electron microscope and stored as jpeg. Want to extrude these surfaces and understand need to convert to vector models
Tried converting jpeg to ai vector file or eps files using free online services (files-conversion.com and several others).
Then imported into moi but see nothing and no errors reported.
Tried also importing file to blender exporting/importing stl to turbocad and exporting as iges as someone suggested but still no luck.
Clearly doing something very wrong?

Hi ak58,

You can add the jpeg pictures to view/image, and then manually trace them, using points or lines or curves or arcs or clothoids or blends, etc.
Alternatively, there are some programs which can trace images...

Do you have a sample jpeg?

Hi ak58, can you please attach the .ai file that you couldn't load here or e-mail it to me at moi@moi3d.com ? I should then be able to take a look at it and see if I can figure out why it's not being read in.

eps files are kind of hit or miss - MoI will attempt to import them but eps is a very loosely defined file format that can contain arbitrary postscript program code, and the Moi importer is not a full postscript interpreter, it just looks for some fairly commonly used eps instructions and if the conversion program you used happens to use something different then that won't work.

So I'd recommend using .ai or .pdf format and not .eps .

I can't really know why your .ai file is not working without being able to look at the actual file though. The first thing that I'd do if I had the file would be to load it into Adobe Illustrator and take a look at what's in it.

Perhaps try importing pdf or dxf trace of your image, from a trace program.
For example: http://www.autotracer.org/ (I've never used it.)

(Google search: bitmap to vector conversion)
