object naming

I find myself constantly typing in the same names for objects, especially when importing objects and trying to get some structure in the set. e.g. first selecting all the bolts, clicking "unnamed" in the command options, then typing 'bolts', then hiding them, only to find there are more bolts, so the process repeats.

it would be nice that one could just click on a name in the object list instead of retyping it every time.

is there maybe a script that does help here?

thanks
wim

Without Script just make a little file text with your names whished!
So just make a copy past from this list when needing! ;)
Not a big deal! :)

You can make the same with names of Scripts / Commands if you don't want install the CUstom UI who is a little tricky to Install!
http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=6507.1

Open your text list of commands/plugins
Copy the one wished
Press Tab
Past it / Enter
Et voilà! :)

Hi wim, there is a script that can help with that, you can find it here:

AssignName - set the name of an object from a list of existing named objects:
http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=3830.4

AssignPresetName - set the name of an object from a fixed preset list of names in a text file:
http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=3830.8

In the future I want to make that possible from within the scene browser itself, but for now the AssignName plug-in should help.

Thanks Michael. the script will do for the moment, looking forward to the (slightly more) ergonomic solution inside the UI!

For ver 4
Perhaps a button that comes up next to the names already allocated, like the coloured ones have
then you can select the new items and add with 1 click to any on the list

cheers

Hi shayne,

That could be a possibility, but it's a bit awkward to try and make a good visual representation of what that little button would do... One thing I've tried to avoid with the scene browser is having it get cluttered up with too many columns of controls which are not immediately recognizable for what they would do.

So another idea that I've had is to make a button that would open a drop down menu and then on that menu there could be some items, one of which could be "Assign to this name"... That would help for future functions as well since they could easily be added to that menu and stay out of the way most of the time.

But either one of those is possible, I just have not had time yet to prototype them.

Hi Michael et al,

Is there a way to name an object selection without having to click on "Unnamed" in the upper right UI corner? I'm thinking of a keyboard-assignable command / inline script that pops up the name input field.

Thanks!

Regards,

— Metin

Hi Metin, yes see here for a script you can set up on a shortcut key that will do the same thing as clicking to set the object name:
