Moi nurbs to maya?

G'day!

Is there a way of taking Moi nurbs into Maya?

I've tried exporting a model into Maya using the .IGS format and I got nothing but an error.

Anybody?

Hi Wibble, I'm surprised that .igs didn't work, that's the way I would normally think to do it.

I don't have Maya over here so it is difficult for me to test, maybe someone else with Maya can describe what works for them.

What is the error that you got in Maya? Naybe that would help sort things out.

Of course, it would be nice if Maya would support reading .3dm files directly, but that's up to them...

The error message I received was a very informative - "Error: Error reading file"

:)

Hey, it beats - "Oops!"

Not by much though... :)

Does it happen on every single file? What about something really simple like just a single plane (from Draw solid / Plane).

Can you write out a NURBS plane from Maya as an .igs file and see if it can read back in its own plane?

If so, then please zip that one that it can read up and post it here, I can take a look at it and try and see what might be different.

There are 2 different sort of ways to put surfaces into IGES files, I thought that most programs by now would support both ways but maybe Maya only will work with one particular way.

Maya doesn't support .igs for exporting.

It's no trouble really. I just wanted to test something out. I imagine most people will be satisfied with exporting their Moi models as a mesh.

Oh! Just spotted something that may tell you the exact type of IGES file maya uses.

In the import options it's listed as:- IGES_DC

Hmm, I was hoping it might say something about "surface type 144" or "surface type 143"...

Give me just a bit here and I'll see if I can generate the other style surface, I'll post one here later for you to test with Maya.

Hi Wibble, can you please try the attached test_plane.igs and see if Maya will read that one in?

This one uses the different style of surface.

If this one works, I should be able to make a setting for controlling which style of surface is written.

Michael, there is a free PLE (Personal Learning Edition) of Maya, that you can download from Autodesk, maybe you got to have a copy for testing.

Yeah, I actually have an older PLE version (6.0) here right now, but it does not appear to have IGES import enabled for it...

Oops!

After doing a little rooting around with Google, I've managed to figure it out. It turns out that Maya needs to be told to load the IGS importer plugin from within its preferences. < Insert blush emoticon>

I can now load Moi nurbs AND your "test plane".

Thanks for your help, Michael!. I would've given up if you hadn't have made the "test plane". When that never worked I just knew it had to be something else.

Hi Wibble, I'm glad that it is working for you now!

Thanks for reporting back here, now I'll know what to tell someone else the next time this comes up.
