Andrei -

Thank you for taking time to make the video tutorial. Tonight I'll try making a spoon :)

Hopefully in future tutorials you'll bring a NVil model into Moi for some precision enhancements.

MoI will remain my primary program as I make mostly mechanical items. But there are situations where I need objects of an organic nature.

The fact that you can go back and forth between NVil and MoI creates some new possibilities.

Very good videos Andrei, most educational to see how you go about it and how the Nvil tools work.

I've watched 3 of them so far.
In the third video where you cut the top of the sugar bottle, it was interesting to see that Nvil has a Soft Selection tool that works a bit like Modos falloffs.
Although I think it would of been easier to use the knife tool to make a nice straight cut.

I also noticed that you use a lot of creasing in your modelling and it works very nicely in Nvil. How do these creases export to other applications where you might want to uvmap the model or render. I would assume they get lost when converting to obj and importing into say blender, modo, c4d etc ?

About Knife you are right I could use knife, and cut it from Free space. But it was good opportunity to show how soft selection works :)
Unfortunately I do not know any way to export creases, I just subdivide model and export it.

Great stuff, Andrei.

As a complete subd novice I'm finding NVIL rather overwhelming even with the great benefit of your configuration. I'm tripping over the simplest things. For example it took me a while to realise that your spoon tutorial is set in a different world orientation than the default. I suspect that I'm also having difficulty with some of the other basic global settings in your tutorial differing from the defaults.

I've decided to try Wings3D first to get familiar with some of the basics.

Sorry, I'm sure that I'm using the wrong words.

I mean which way the x,y and z axes are pointing.

For example, the default seems to be y-up, z label at the bottom of vertical, x to the right of horizontal.

While your spoon example, in top view, has y up, x at the bottom of vertical, z at the left of horizontal.

Mike,
I just checked it.
I did not change any Axis and there is no way to do it in NVil, you can change them only by using work-plane.
My config use default axes. So it looks like this;

Where Y is Up/Down, Z is "front/Back", X is "Left/Right"

My spoon is laying along Z axis, Check Top View:

So I can not see what is wrong :)

Looks like I understood what did you mean...
In MoI for Up orientation by default is Z. This is common for Cad Modelers.

But Polygonal modelers usually has Y as up orientation.

So nothing is wrong for example I changed in MoI for a long time ago axis labels to make them like in Polygonal modelers. For me is more convenient from school times when Y is Up.

Thanks, Andrei.

I worked out that I could re-orient to match your tutorial however this was just an example of the problems I've run into.

Another example is that I've managed the pivot procedure once but I just can't get it to work again and I think it is some simple setting that, for a complete beginner, is baffling while for an expert like yourself seems very obvious and does not require explanation.

Don't worry, I'll eventually get there.

As for z being the up configuration, I was totally amazed to see the this is not the case for polygonal modellers. It is hard to believe. At school, doing 2D graphs, did you not use x for horizontal and y for the vertical axis???? Vertical as going up the plane of the paper, not perpendicular to the paper.
