Hi everyone,

I am a devoted fan of MoI... I love this program and intend to stay with it forever. I am also a devoted user of trueSpace7.51, Caligari's absolutely awesome new 3D Development software. Currently there are several Moi3D users in addition to myself who are also members of Caligari's trueSpace Community Forums, and of course as more people there discover MoI, more people there will also become devoted members here as well.

I just wanted you all to know that the CEO of Caligari posted a message a couple of weeks ago asking Caligari users (a very large community) which specific file formats we wanted to have included in upcoming versions of trueSpace. In replies a couple of people including myself suggested full 3DM file import capability for Caligari trueSpace so that we could use Mol nurbs files alongside the unparalleled Vray rendering capabilities of Caligari's newest versions of trueSpace. We also mentioned 3DM's widespread use in Rhino.

Unfortunately there were many genuinely excellent and competing file format suggestions at that time, and not enough trueSpace users were in favor of 3DM versus the other formats such as BVH and Collada, which the CEO did adopt in this last trueSpace release after considering all our responses in that thread carefully.

As time goes by, undoubtedly more MOI users will emerge among the trueSpace ranks to similarly voice their MOI support, and with a genuinely concerned and responsive CEO such as Caligari in fact has, it's only a brief matter of time before these two outstanding software packages become fully supportive of one another at the nurbs level. This will of course lead to a truly huge increase in the number of new users for both products which will be a very welcome development for us all.

In the meantime, if anyone else here is also a member of the trueSpace Community Forums, be sure to spread the word there about MoI3D among the membership there for the sake of all of us in both Communities, lets join these two great Communities together!

Lets see if we can get 3DM format support in the next trueSpace, version 7.6!

Yeah, the cool thing about them supporting 3DM would be that it would help out both MoI and Rhino users alike. That's probably more "bang for the buck" from their point of view rather than working on something that is more specialized to only one application.

I was hoping to make things like this easier by adopting the 3dm format as MoI's main format instead of making up a brand new one.

Hi Michael,

Yeah, I did mention that fact to him about Rhino and also in two related messages in that thread provided the link to McNeels 3DM development page for the Caligari Devs to mull over, still not enough users jumped on the bandwagon with me THIS time, but I'll keep pushing until they do! Rest assured on that!

It's a pretty fascinating thread really. you should read it all since you're a Developer yourself and will see more in it than many of us would accordingly!

Here's the link, and I'll keep you apprised of any further related developments as soon as they occur.

Be sure to read Posts # 9, # 42, # 81, # 87, # 89 in relation to this, the post numbers are at the top right of each post there. Also, the thread starter named "roman" is Caligari's CEO.

Joining these two great programs and communities would only benefit everyone involved!

That's a cool batch of models you showed in message #81 over there!

Such a wide variety... I think you posted a couple of those over here but some I don't remember.

Thanks!

Yeah, it was kind of "overkill" to post that many MOI models on the Caligari forums! Hahahaha! I did that so that many of the Caligari Forum users could potentially see something like what they also create, and how easy it is to produce such a wide variety of models within MOI.

I know for sure that one Forum member there became a new MOI devotee as a result of those uploads, so it was a good idea for sure! ;^)

Hi 3d visuals dude .. Hi Michael
3d visuals dude turned me to Moi3d
and I thank him very much ! : )
I love moi 3d !
I was one of the other to request the file format over
there and hope to see it soon .
I was one of the people who requested Vray
2 years ago and I know .... its not going to be easy......
Nice benefit is that (remember I requested a tapper and bend tool )
Truespace does that with nurbs too.
So an import and export would draw lots of people to
both sides .
There is another thread going on here about render engines
and Truespace was mentioned there for its realtime render
solution.
It sure is a more affordable solution then "Hypershot"
plus it has pretty good animation capabilities......

Hi Rayman, great to see you here!

Lets just hope the two of us can become the twenty of us in another month or so now!

As for Caligari adopting 3DM import/export and cut/paste, I believe they have very likely been waiting until their core rewrite was complete (which it now is) before they took on McNeel's marketshare. They are certainly in a position to do it now though, and I'm equally certain they are fully aware of that fact after likely considering that potential closely for a decade now. They certainly have more to gain right now than lose in the process, and that thread referenced above concerned ~the next~ release of trueSpace, not 7.5 or 7.51. It was said there that the Corporate "thinking" on these formats was very much along the lines of what we had suggested but that at the time that was all he "could say" about that "at this point." My bets are squarely on Torque (TGEA) and 3DM, both would represent a brilliant move on their part now as I'm sure they are fully aware.

So now you're a "MOI Man" like me! Great!!! We should start some MOI to trueSpace WIP Projects for their forums then!

How about one of the projects I have on hold at the moment... a MOI Submarine and Underwater World for utilization in First Person Navigation for MMO Shared Space via truePlay? It can be scripted now in trueSpace 7.51 and truePlay is free!

Food for thought? I'm open to suggestions!

Glad you joined us Rayman, these are great days indeed for us all!

Hi 3d visuals dude !
Thank you for the warm welcome and the kind
words ! : )
I am very happy to be here and always open for new projects...
You probably have noticed over at the other forum that things are
not so easy going... sometimes one has to vent things to get
them sorted.I´m an old time user and have posted on the old
forum a lot and people like parva know what i am talking
about from old discussions .The reason I tell you this is that
I am not so confident as you are ... to finaly get a nurbs program
format like 3dm.....trust me it takes a lot of complaints ...
its not like here in this forum.
You ask for something and Michael (and I thank him for it )
tells you right away if it can be put into the pipeline or not.
He gives you a good reason why or why not it can or cant
be done . So what we can do is to tell as many people as
possible about this fantastic program and USE it as much as
possible. It would be wonderfull to have 3dm im and export
but as I have already tried out with the luuv plug obj import
works nicely too and it is fantastic the way it is right now.
3dm would just be better.
Best regards
Peter

Hi Rayman / Peter!

>I am very happy to be here and always open for new projects...
>You probably have noticed over at the other forum that things are

Yeah... this Forum is like a trip to Tahiti by comparison, I like that a lot so I plan to not spend to much time thinking about the other Forum while I'm here, I think about it too much when I'm away from it as it is!

As for being open to new projects, great! Lets bang our heads together on some Moi-2-TS project ideas then!

One of the best ways to do introduce MOI capabilities to TS users would be to create some very interesting models in MOI together... something highly elaborate... a city perhaps. Then share the scene together between you and I as both of us tackle the best ways of applying Vray shaders and effects to it until we are both very happy with it. Then each of us could do "a killer Vray render of it" from diferent angles and submit the finished renders to the Finished Artwork section of the C Forums together, as well as to the monthly Caligari Still Image Rendering Contest. (Lasting C-Website PR for winners there, including quoted interviews on specific methods utilized.)

I believe entering MOI-related WIPS in the actual WIPS area of the C Forums (as opposed to the Finished Artwork Area where they would be fine by contrast) would be a potential mistake, however, in that doing so would invite devisive and potentially heated opinions as to whether TS or MOI should be utilized for various minor inherent modeling decisions. Placing them in the Finished Artwork area by contrast would tend far less to invite the useless opinions of certain individuals there who only welcome such potentially devisive opportunities as a means to artificially elevate their own status or agendas within the Forum Membership, or at least within their own minds to be more accurate. Such is the case with every large forum, the ice is fine as long as experience has taught you where not to step. ;^)

What kinds of MOI-2-TS Projects would you really like to explore together?

>You ask for something and Michael (and I thank him for it )

This is what I love about MOI. From start to finish it is most carefully fashioned by a man with a genuine love for it's design and potential, consequently it is a love shared by all of us here, as we all here often state. By providing us all with the means of potentially enhancing various features of MOI through Scripting, Michael has additionally gone well beyond the limitations of many Developers as well, enabling us each to personally share directly with him in "the raising of his baby."

Well done Michael, we all love it almost as much as you do now!

Absolutely!

Yes, the Luuv Plugin for TS is great for OBJ format. Of course the real potential for awesome interactivity between TS and MOI though lies in TS fully implementing the 3DM NURBS format capabilities of BOTH Rhino and MOI. Imagine, for instance, if Caligari had just released this last TS version with full 3DM support. With that we could bring 3DM NURBS objects into the trueSpace7.51 Link Editor and SCript Editors, apply a huge spectrum of realtime physics properties and physics effects to them, animate them, edit them with soft-selection geometry paintbrishes and displacement brushes... the list is endless!!!

Likewise Peter, lets start something momentous here for all of us!
