First Model: Torus Knots

Hello, I'm new here. I tried moi a few months ago and didn't like it. But now I tried it again and am starting to like it! Here are some torus-knot doodles. The path was made very quickly (and accurately) by snapping verts to the underlying guide-polygons. To save time, remember what was said about the placement of the profile curve when using the sweep command:

"If the circle is outside of the bounding box of the rail curve, it will be automatically rotated and aligned to the start of the path curve. If the circle is within the bounding box of the rail curve, it will be used in its current location and then swept along the path.

The auto-place mode is nice, because you can just draw the circle right flat on the world plane, you don't have to worry about getting it in the right location. You can also have multiple cross-sections auto placed, just arrange them left to right."

Hi Anthony, those turned out very nice!

I'm also trying to figure out a way to give more explicit control over the auto-place mode, it is kind of a hidden thing right now and it is so useful that I would like to make it easier to see that it is an option.

Can you remember why you didn't like MoI originally? Was it missing some tools that you needed at that time? Was the UI too different from a normal application (like no top menu bar, ... ) ?

I'm kind of interested in people's first impressions.

- Michael

Cool knots! Sometimes this forum looks and feels a bit like a math class :-)

Thanks.

There was nothing wrong with the pleasant-looking interface or the toolset. I didn't miss the top-menu since it's not really needed. I didn't like it because I didn't understand nurbs modeling and there wasn't enough documentation of how to get started.

I see Anthony, yes definitely lack of documentation is a problem.

I'll be working on fixing that up just after the software itself is finished up, which won't be much longer...

Hello Anthony,

Those are really great knots. Could you please give me some extra information how you made shapes like these?
Many thanks in advance.

Regards Hans

Thanks.

Look at the third image above and note the two guide triangles. Just draw a "control-points" curve and snap to those vertices. See my knot tutorial for Blender if you get stuck: http://home.comcast.net/~chronosphere

Thanks Anthony!

Set up knot in Moi and exported as OBJ.
I created a QTime movie file using trueSpace 7.51 real-time render. Output 100 1024x768 frames at 2 frames/second and compiled and down-sized frames in Photoshop 3 Ext.

Cool! I like how you made the texture move to make it feel alive. A snake knot...
