Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me with explaning what New Nsided hole filling command does.

I tried to find the explanation in http://moi3d.com/wiki/V3Beta, but they weren't clear to me.

Thank you!

Hi j8jang, there's some discussion on NSided here:
http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=5721.2

It works by filling in a patch inside a selection of edges that touch end-to-end forming a closed loop.

In order to use it, you need to have edges selected (not any of the original wireframe generator curves, hide those if they are getting in the way of selecting surface edges), and the edges need to touch each other at their endpoints in a ring like pattern.

I always had a hard time with nsided, it in most cases doesn't work for me.
For example with this trimmed ball. Error: calculation failed
Or is it just a misinterpretation by me? Does the curve that should be filled with nsided have to consists of different curves with "hard corners"?

Hi mark, yes normally the edges to be filled would be touching each other at sharp corners, although it may be able to work if they are not.

But also it expects there to be at least 3 edges, it definitely won't work if there's just one single edge like it looks like you may have there. I'd be able to tell about that more easily if you would post the 3DM model file that has your object in it instead of just a screenshot.

You can try to cut that edge up into multiple separate edges using Edit > Trim with the "Add trim points" option inside Trim, then that may work but probably that kind of case with smooth sides isn't going to give very good results.

Thanks, Michael
Your hint was correct, with the into 3 segments trimmed opening the sphere could be closed with nsided.
Not as expected but the shape it generated is very interesting.
The opening divided into 6 parts and then filled with nsided brought a flawless result. :-)

Another question I just thought of.
I used rebuild to simplify the point count of the opening a bit.
But there is no rebuild command for surfaces, is it?

Hi mark,

> But there is no rebuild command for surfaces, is it?

No currently there isn't. In the future I do want to extend the Rebuild command to work on both curves and surfaces but right now it only works on curves.

Thank you.
Currently I'm using Rhino to rebuild surfaces. Fortunately you can drop shapes back and forth via the clipboard. So no big deal here. :-)
