If you hold down the Ctrl key when you click, that's a shortcut for placing a corner point without needing to check the box.

It's just the regular Draw curve > Freeform > Control points, just using the Ctrl key shortcut.

If it were to be lofted, there would be edges there - any time a surface would have a sharp crease in it you will have an edge along that spot.
