curve - surface trimming

Hi,

Lots of questions the last days from my side :-)

I want to trim a revolve object using a curve -
do all the points of this curve need to be positioned
on a common plane ?

Does a trim using a curve always cut through the whole
object or is it possible to cut only through the fornt side
of an object - in this case a revolve object ?

Yes, that is the best way. Then the cutting curve will be projected onto the surface along the curve's plane normal.

It will always show you the fragments of everything cutting through, but in Trim the last phase of the command lets you pick which fragments to discard, if you only pick the front piece to discard the cut on the back will not be processed at all.

If you want to just cut everything up and leave the pieces behind instead of discarding stuff then it's a little bit more complicated. If you need to do a strategic cut of only one portion of an object you may instead want to extrude the cutting object into a surface that only sticks partway through the target object, and then use that as the cutting object instead of the curve.
