One of the least obvious things we love about MoI

As I mentioned in a previous post we see MoI as an ideal format translation utility as well as a damn fine nurbs modeler.

We've been experimenting with exporting architectural visualization scenes as both IGES and SAT into MoI (we prefer SAT by the way for those who are interested) and then 'exploding' all the scene elements and renaming/grouping individual surfaces (using the join function to create new polysurfaces) into logical surface groups ready for texturing in our rendering software of choice. The automatic UV mapping is a real time saver and we tend to find that the only tweaks we have to make further down the pipeline is individual UV tiling attributes for the different surfaces. The ability to reset the viewport scene focus on the fly is a seamless workflow enhancer too.

I'm aware that we could use 'styles' in much the same way but this creates a separate material for each style with OBJ exports (which can be a pain), the important thing for us is having a near perfect set of UV's to work with. Mapping out UV's is the bane of every modelers life (well most that I've met anyway!) so this bonus discovery has been a real delight to us all as it wasn't something we necessarily expected.

Cheers

Hi Jon, I'm glad the automatic UV mapping is useful for you!

It is an area that I want to improve in the future for joined together solids, right now all surfaces of a solids overlap over the base full UV unit square, in the future I'd like to make them occupy separate "islands" rather than overlapping.

Some people use a separate UV mapping utility to solve that problem currently, some choices for that are:
UVMapper: http://www.uvmapper.com/
Unwrap3D: http://www.unwrap3d.com/u3d/index.aspx
Unfold3D: http://www.polygonal-design.fr/

Thanks for the tip off there Michael.

We use Headus UV Layout or the UV tools within Modo for most problematic UV tasks but only run a couple of licenses to Headus as it's an expensive option for a one trick pony so keen to explore some of the other choices you have highlighted. For a lot of ArchViz tasks we only need to ensure that there's no weird stretching in the UV's (that will throw out the texture tiles) so we're finding MoI is pretty good as it stands (especially seeing as we break up our models into their component parts to ease that workflow).

Great to hear that you'll be improving MoI's native UV capabilities too, anything that eases that particular task is welcome indeed!

Because we break up our models into logical component parts for texturing another thing we would like to see is some form object nesting in MoI. I've seen this requested before on the forum so I'm sure it's on your radar. And whilst on the subject of the object properties panel, is there a script available that enables a user to call up the renaming input popup via a keyboard shortcut. I searched high and low for this but couldn't find it. It's a minor irritation but having to keep on moving the mouse over to click on the object name field to access the rename panel is a tad annoying especially seeing as the resulting panel then opens up back over the viewport. I'm sure a script is fairly easy to write for this seeing as the interface is driven by HTML/Javascript so if one doesn't exist I'm sure one of the boys at the office will be able to put something together.

Hi Jon, I think that UVMapper may have an older version there available for free, look for the "Classic" version on their web site (http://www.uvmapper.com/)

Check out here for how to set up a shortcut key for pulling up the "Edit name" dialog:

Splendid. That was exactly the script I was looking for. :)
