Hi Tom, you can probably get what you want using the new-for-v3 Flow command, which is under Transform > Deform > Flow.
The way Flow works is it transforms things relative from a "base surface" onto a target surface. You'll need to create a plane going underneath your sun, the plane will be the base surface. Then you'll have to model a curved surface that will be used as the target surface. The ring itself won't work since the sun is much larger than it, you'll need to model a sweep surface that approximates the ring shape but is larger, or make a big sphere or something like that as the target surface.
Then you'll position the sun and the base plane together above the target surface, select just the sun (not the base or target surfaces yet), and run the Transform > Deform > Flow command, pick the base surface and then the target surface and enable the checkbox for "Projective" mode.

The way projective mode works is it shoots out rays along the surface normals of the base surface and intersects them with the target surface - in general your target surface should be big enough so that each ray that is shot out from the base surface will hit the target surface, that's why you'll need to model a somewhat larger target surface than just the ring that you currently have.
