Hello,

i have minimum knowledge in nurbs modelling and MoI. I have this model done in rhino. i need to bring it into modo.

Can you guys point me to a tutorial about converting nurbs to poly via MoI. The obj export option, gives me a very triangulated model, wich i have to rebuild in modo. I am guessing i need to conect those nurbs in MoI, but i don't even know what to search for when looking for a tutorial.

thank you

Hi mariot - if your model is made up of a bunch of individual surfaces you will need to join those together so that the surfaces are connected by a joined shared edge. You can use the Join command in either Rhino or MoI to do that part. In MoI that's located under the Edit palette.

Once your surfaces are joined together then when they get meshed the mesh gets generated taking special care to make the same vertex structure along those edges so you won't have any little holes there.

Well, the fundamental thing is to just do a "Save As" to a mesh format and it will convert it for you during that saving process... There aren't really any tutorials about it since it's such a simple thing.

Maybe it would help if you could show some details of what is not working very well about the conversion for you. One thing to note is that in general the result of a NURBS to polygon conversion is meant to just be rendered, not to be used as a sub-d smoothing cage. If you're trying to do sub-d smoothing with the polygons then you generally need to retopologize it since sub-d requires certain kinds of topology in order to produce a good smoothed result. Typically though a CAD model is already smoothed with fillets and such in areas that are supposed to be smooth so generally it's in its final smoothed shape already right when you export it and does not need to be further smoothed (and in fact applying further smoothing would mutate the shape and make it incorrect actually). It's not unusual for people who are used to working with sub-d smoothing all the time to get kind of confused about this and try to apply sub-d smoothing to their CAD models as well.

If you're trying to do sub-d smoothing on the generated mesh, that's not really something that's expected to work - you need to create meshes for sub-d smoothing by hand with certain characteristics about the mesh, you need to guide those by laying down edge flows and things like that yourself, you won't get those characteristics on a mesh that's going through an automated process.

You can expect though that the polygons from the automatic conversion will render well though, that's generally what you should be doing with the results of the conversion.

I'll need to know more detailed information from you in order to give you any specific help, like what are you trying to do with the mesh result, and can you show the results that you are getting now so I can understand what problem you're trying to solve.
