Objects vanishing out of file ...

Hi there,
i am quite new to MOI and NURBS modelling. Because the project i am working on
is already there as a poly model, i am importing it as a SAT file into MOI and use it
as a sort of 3d tracing source, which works quite well.
Unfortunateley are some parts (most of it) of the imported model gone, after saving
and reopening the MOI file. I dont understand, why that is happening?
Aside from that i would really apprechiate a import option for OBJ. Is there any way to
do that right now, or might there be such an Option in a future version?
Best regards
Heiner

Hmm, that's an unusual problem. If you can repeat it by opening one particular SAT file and then saving again, can you please send that SAT file to me at moi@moi3d.com so I could look into that?

Also is it possible that you did a File > Export to write out the file rather than File > "Save As" ? Export is short for "Export selected objects", and it writes out only the currently selected objects to the file you pick. So for example if you had some objects selected and then did Export that is normal that only those objects would get written. If you want to write out everything regardless of selection use "Save As" instead.

OBJ files usually contain polygon mesh geometry which is a much different kind of object structure than the NURBS models that MoI is focused on working with.

There is a separate utility that you can use to extract the wireframe of an OBJ file as line curves which you can then import see here for more info on that, which is available here:
http://moi3d.com/wiki/Resources#Obj23dmWireframe_converter

Also some previous discussion here:

Hi Michael,
unfortunatley I can not send any files, since i am here under a heavy "Non disclosure spell" ...:-(
But i will try to recreate the problem with another model which i can use more freely.

Your tip with the OBJ converter was worth a million, because it seems as if it not only solved my
vanishing objects problem but also my importing issue. Thank you a thousand times!

One more question: Is it possible to convert curves from a curve with edges into one smooth one
with direct or indirect control points?

Best regards,
Heiner

There is a Rebuild command that can help with that:
http://moi3d.com/2.0/docs/moi_command_reference10.htm#rebuild

If you set it in "# of points" mode and turn off "Keep corners" will sample points along the curve and build a new smooth curve through those sampled points.

Sometimes it can be good to just redraw a messy curve though just by snapping points onto the old one using the regular curve draw commands.
