If you're already familiar with sub-d modeling in 3dsMax to produce organic shapes like that, you would probably want to continue using it for organic shapes.

MoI is very useful and fast for more mechanical shapes, things that are more defined by 2D profile curves.

Organic modeling is not really a good fit with any CAD program, organic modeling is where the polygon/sub-d type modeling method is strong.

On the other hand, polygon/sub-d modeling methods are very poor for manufactured mechanical shapes that have holes punched in them like steel punched parts or things like that. For such shapes things are reversed and sub-d modeling becomes a poor choice and CAD modeling methods become very good.

But the type of model that you are doing is quite a ways into the "organic sculpted shape" type category.

Hi Khalil, CAD programs which are focused on generating accurate shapes using mostly 2D profile curves do not tend to be very good for creating organic models.

In a similar way, programs that are focused on organic modeling are not good at doing accurate mechanical models.

There is not any one single 3D modeling technique that is universally good at every single kind of shape - different modeling technologies tend to be good at particular kinds of shapes.

Although it's not too bad to use MoI to generate some elements of scroll work, the original model that you posted in the first message of this thread is of a quite high level of complexity, it will be quite difficult to create a highly complex organic shape like that in MoI. I would recommend that if you're already familiar with creating that shape in 3DS Max that you would probably want to continue using your current technique for that and probably not try to use MoI for that particular style of model.

Although it's possible to do it, it's not really the kind of thing that the software is primarily designed to do.

Hi Khalil,

I actually made those videos a while back. I have a small cnc machine I use for hobby and have just as much fun making the designs as cutting them. I use Moi for a lot things with it, but as the others have said orgranic shapes like the one you put up are better done in a quad modelor. It just a lot easier to to tweak the shape out than to draw the profile. Right now I am carving and designing a bunch of different fly boxes for fly fishing. I used Moi to make the basic box to exact size then made the patterns for the top in modo and zbrush. Moi does have a ton uses for me with cnc, but it is not the only tool.

I would agree with the others that the best way to approach this may not be with a CAD tool but a polygon modeler.

However, as there is a need to have this kind of work in nurbs/CAD format for CNC machining, there are ways to convert polys to nurbs.

You could look at:
http://integrityware.com (for 3dsMax)
http://www.resurf3d.com (for Rhino)

or these VERY expensive solutions such as:
http://www.rapidform.com
http://www.geomagic.com
