Hi everyone. I am trying to wrap my head around designing a functioning cam for a pen click mechanism. Does anyone have any pointers. Modeling it is no problem, but creating a properly functioning cam shape seems as if there should be some rules to follow.

There are a few varieties of the click pen mechanism, one is the cam follower style explained in a video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dDiXJsmDOQ
With things like this especially being a pen that are pretty cheap I usually go and buy one and pull it apart to see how it works.
