Yes, I did use the closest point option for that projection and did get a kind of zig-zag around the letter M after using the Trim tool to separate the surfaces.

However, I'm happy to say that I've had great sucess with your method - it's a very easy way to do things and the extrude to a point feature is super for this kind of work.
