For Cinema4D like you're using their OBJ support is great, but unfortunately it's not supported so well with 3DS Max - for Max FBX format tends to be the best way to ensure that everything goes across.

For whatever reason Autodesk has never seemed to put much effort into getting Max's OBJ import to work very well, but they have put a lot of work into FBX.

Thanks, yes I tried OBJ and it came in with extra face all over the place, FBX with the tweaks is spot on.
Infact i'm really impressed at just how well it imports! normally getting models into max with out having to spend ages cleaning them up is quite problem.
Below another quickie with HDRI light.

Going to work through a nice little sketching book 'Sketching by Koos eissen' as this seem like a nice way to learn how to translate ojects to this way of modeling.
